What is Eczema? A substantial proportion of the US population has symptoms of eczema; 31.6 million with eczema, and at least 17.8 million with moderate to severe eczema or atopic dermatitis. Eczema Eczema is a condition where patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, red, cracked, and rough. Blisters can also occur. ... Cause: The specific cause of eczema remains unknown, but it is believed to develop due to a combination of hereditary (genetic) and environmental factors. Symptoms: Rashes cover much of the body including scalp and face. Rashes can be especially prominent on neck, face, and around the eyes Rashes can cause very dry skin and permanently itchy. Rashes can cause scaly skin Over time, the following symptoms can manifest Rashes can lighten or darken in color Rashes can thicken (also known as lichenification) and then develop knots and a permanent itch. Treatment: Medication There is no cure for eczema. Treatment for the condition aims to heal the affected skin and prevent flaring of the symptoms. Doctors will suggest a plan of treatment based around a patient's age, symptoms, and current state of health. For some people, eczema goes away over time, and for others, it remains a lifelong condition. Topical corticosteroid creams and ointments - these are a type of anti-inflammatory medication and should relieve the main symptoms of eczema, such as skin inflammation and itchiness. If ineffective, systemic corticosteroids can be prescribed. These are either injected or taken by mouth; they are only used for short periods of time. Antihistamines that cause drowsiness are often recommended as these can help to reduce the risk of night-time scratching. Living Style Taking regular lukewarm baths and Using mild soap or a non-soap cleanser when washing Moisturizing every day with lotion for multiple times a day (Suggestion: Cerave, Aquaphor or Eucerin) Using a humidifier in dry or cold weather. Avoid alcohol and seafood (any product from the sea) Wearing cotton and soft fabrics, avoiding rough, scratchy fibers, and tight-fitting clothing
