Pay attention to how you use your body. It’s shape will conform to the positions we spend most of our time in. Muscles can shorten or overstretch and become s...tressed and weaken. Joints wear down from excessive forces placed upon them. Avoid injury and degeneration by moving more of your body in different ways every day! See more

https://mailchi.mp/yogaall/new-york-reopening-alert-082720 Yoga Alliance, the professional organization for yoga teachers & yoga schools, has been a source of great guidance during COVID. They consistently advise studio owners to make the health and safety of their students a top priority. We agree! Stay safe, everyone...and stay dedicated to a consistent home practice.
August 28 COVID Update: Cayuga County's Stage 4 COVID guidance still prohibits indoor exercise classes. We had decided not to try to re-open the yoga studio anyhow, preferring to err on the side of caution. The Governor's order allowing gyms and fitness facilities to re-open allows local authorities to make the final calls, and so far our local officials aren't taking any chances.
This article explains the mechanisms by which obesity increases bad outcomes with coronavirus, and how losing weight can put the body into a better balance to fight the disease.
Our community has very high rates of obesity, including childhood obesity. Obesity correlates to diabetes and other health problems. Yet efforts to improve school nutrition or limit sale of junk food are opposed because people equate unbridled consumerism with freedom. Where's the freedom in bad health? Other countries are taking action. Mexico's obesity epidemic was triggered by NAFTA, when American junk food entered. The traditional Mexican diet is pretty healthy. As a Rotary member, I'd like to see us stop selling sugary sodas at the Grill during Village band concerts and serve water instead. We are a community service organization and I don't feel we are truly serving our community when we distribute stuff that is unhealthy.
We will not be re-opening the yoga studio in the foreseeable future due to the COVID risk. State of NY is issuing guidance today on procedures for re-opening gyms. We don't see how our small indoor facility can meet requirements, and we want to play it safe. We will be sending refund checks to those who registered for classes that were cancelled, including our multi-class pass holders. Please stay safe & well!
Do-it-yourself tips!
https://connect.kripalu.org/ Great online yoga classes. You can sign up for free, for a week.
Again, I'm encouraging Gentle Yoga enthusiasts to take advantage of these free online classes with a Kripalu master teacher.
I incorporate movement education into my basic yoga classes. Most people don't know how to walk properly. A lot of people walk for exercise; paying attention to body mechanics when you walk will pay dividends in a stronger, more pain-free body.
Monday, June 28 COVID update: Indoor group exercise classes are not permitted under current state re-opening policies. So our yoga studio remains closed. We hope our students are continuing their practices with the many online streaming classes available, or using DVDs. Stay healthy and safe, everyone!
