Broadalbin Library 04.01.2021

Hello to All our Friends and Patrons post Thanksgiving. Just a reminder that we are still open for borrowing. The Covid situation is fluid and if we need to make changes, we will announce them here and in any other public ways we can. But today I want to introduce the Broadalbin patrons of our Library to Henry Porter, a British writer of thrillers with international intrigue. Some compare him to John LeCarre, but it seems to me that Porter is easier to read than other s...py writers; perhaps that is because his plots are so timely and the situations almost taken out of the news stories of the day. FIREFLY was the first Porter book I purchased after reading a review on line by chance. It is described as a "classic chase" thriller involving a young boy who is a Syrian refugee trying to reach Europe, but ISIS killers are tracking him. Be prepared to stay up very late, unwilling to put this book down. Another Porter novel entitled WHITE HOT SILENCE was then newly donated to us. Happily, there are other Henry Porter novels just waiting to be purchased for our collection. Porter has won the Crime Writers of America Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award and other awards recognizing his talent. See more

We have been busy clearing our shelves of some very old books in order to make room for all the new ones that are arriving. This week the library has received some exciting new fiction and one work of non-fiction. These books are pictured below. Christina Baker Kline is well known for her work about Christina Olson, the inspiration for many of Andrew Wyeth's paintings and for her book, The Orphan Train. In her latest novel, THE E XILES,, she tells the story of a woman se...nt from Newgate Prison, London, to Australia and how she meets the challenges of a new world. Promises to be a very worthwhile read. THE ORPHAN'S GUILT comes to us from Archer Mayor, a popular author at the Broadalbin Library. Mayor, himself, is a death investigator for the Vermont State Medical examiner and was a firefighter/EMT for years in that state. Our library has most of his long list of detective fiction available. MONOGAMY by Sue Miller is on most best seller lists at this time. It deals with a 30 yr marriage as told by the wife after the recent death of her husband and revelations come to light. THE WARMTH OF OTHER SUNS is a work of non-fiction that tells the story of "the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the South for northern and western cities, in search of a better life." This is a book that promises to be a very worthwhile reading experience. The author, Isabel Wilkerson, is a Pulitzer Prize winner and this work was a National Book Critics Circle Award winner in 2010 when it was first published. We did not own a copy of the book and although we are a bit late , I decided to purchase it as Ms Wilkerson has a new book on the market which we hope to buy as well. We are also expecting delivery this week of Frederik Backman's book, ANXIOUS PEOPLE and John Grisham's, A TIME FOR MERCY. See more

Thank you to all our friends and supporters for making our Book Sale a great success. Please stop by and borrow the latest books as they arrive on our shelves. I am expecting new and interesting books this week. On order are two non-fiction works of interest such as LIGHTS OUT: Pride, Delusion and the Fall of General Electric; LOU GEHRIG: The Lost Memoir. We are also awaiting a couple of novels of historical fiction that are not especially well known but have received excellent reviews. I will feature these two in a future post. Stay tuned......... . PS Remember, there are still plenty of books left over on the porch which is open daily from 9-5 on the Honor System. Check it out.

A new shipment of books has arrived and they are already circulating. Our readers are clearly interested in what is happening in the book world. Contrary to popular belief, the hardbound book is not "dead" yet. We love the newest technology, too, but there is nothing like an exciting book cover and the feel of new pages to turn.....See our newest books below...
