Hey #CoGreene! Are you obsessed with the red planet? As the clouds clear out tonight, you can use Mars to find an iconic group of stars. If you know the Subaru logo, then you know these stars. They have been given many names including the Seven Sisters, the Pleiades, and Dao Look Gai (hen and chicks). It is actually an open cluster of thousands of stars, but we can see the six or seven brightest with the naked eye. Using a pair of binoculars, you can double that number.... Look to the Southwest in the early evening. There will be two reddish stars. Use Orion’s belt to star hop past Aldebaran (reddish-orange). The Pleiades is the circle of stars right above Mars. The next time Mars will appear this close to the Seven Sisters is 2038. The name Pleiades comes to us from Greek mythology, the seven daughters of the Titan Altas. There are many North American myths related to this star group including the Lakota story of the formation of Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. While the majority of cultures see seven sisters, the Lakota see seven boys.
