Professor Elora Mukherjee and her students in the Immigrants’ Rights Clinic worked with a coalition of advocates to secure the release of women who were subject to abusive medical procedures, including gynecological procedures, while detained by U.S. immigration authorities. These women have supported each other, organized, and continually fought to bring the truth to light, despite every effort by the Trump administration to silence them, Mukherjee tells AP. https://bit.ly/39aeg46

Professor Suzanne Goldberg will join the leadership team of the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights. Goldberg, who is stepping down from her role as Columbia’s executive vice president for university life, has been appointed deputy assistant secretary for strategic operations and outreach and acting assistant secretary of the office. Goldberg was the founding director of the Law School’s trailblazing Sexuality and Gender Law Clinic and served as the co-director ...of The Center for Gender and Sexuality Law. While we at the Law Schooland the entire university communitywill feel a void while she is on leave to pursue this important position of government service, I know our nation will benefit greatly from her expertise and from her steadfast commitment to using the law and legal tools to advance the greater good, said Dean Gillian Lester. https://bit.ly/2MgJa1O

Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang ’99 returned to Columbia Law for a virtual visit on October 27 and spoke with students about his campaign, his policy advocacy work with Humanity Forward, and his advice on how to remain compassionate during a time of deep polarization and anger. Find something that you believe in and stand for, that the market detests, he said. The market hates preserving our environment. The market hates mental health. The market hates caring for kids. The market hates single mothers. Just find one thing that you believe in, that the market does not like, and it will help you preserve your humanity. https://bit.ly/2TFpHYS
