We're celebrating Purim online!

Temple Emanu-El of Rochester 11.04.2021

Purim Celebration Online Friday, Feb 26, 7pm Join us for a fun and surprising Purim Celebration! Our evening will be led by Rabbi Drorah Setel and cantorial soloist Charlene Sommers. This year, we will celebrate together in some familiar and some new ways. Our service will include megillah reading, music, and of course! a spiel. To join in the spirit of things, consider coming prepared with some or all of the following:... -a costume (which only has to be from the waist up!) -a funny or unusual Zoom background -a boo, hiss or other sign to hold up when Haman’s name is mentioned as appropriate, a glass of wine or other intoxicant to fulfill the tradition that one should become inebriated (for this night only) Visit the link below for the Zoom link and to download a Purim Celebration booklet. https://emanuelrochester.org/worship/

This Friday we will celebrate Simchat Torah ("rejoicing in the Torah"), the closing celebration of our autumn holiday season. Traditionally, it is a time when we read the final passages of Deuteronomy and then the opening chapters of Genesis as we begin a new cycle of Torah readings. Like many American congregations, Temple Emanu-El has also observed the contemporary custom of opening the entire Torah scroll so that we can see its length and beauty. This year, because we wil...l not be together in person, we will have the experience of a Simchat Torah observance without Torah scrolls. Instead, we will focus on Torah in the larger sense of our people's sacred wisdom. In rabbinic teaching, Torah is the blueprint of creation. Friday (Oct. 9)'s Shabbat and Simchat Torah service begins on Zoom at 7 p.m. Please visit the link below to download a PDF prayer booklet, and you'll find the Zoom link there. https://emanuelrochester.org/temple-emanu-el-online-servic/

A few words about Friday's online Sukkot service from Rabbi Drorah: Dear TEE community, Our current need to be physically apart while connecting in new ways has provided an opportunity for innovation. I hope those of you who joined us over the High Holidays enjoyed some of the options we were able to provide for observing them. This Friday we'll have our first (and, one can only hope, only) Zoom Sukkot celebration where we will construct a virtual sukkah, make substitutes for... a traditional lulav and etrog, and invite spiritual guests (ushpizin/ot) to join us. To make the lulav you will need 5-6 pieces of paper, tape, and a pair of scissors and a lemon can be used to replace the etrog. Additional paper or index cards as well as pens or markers can be used for the ushpizin/ot ritual but aren't necessary. We'll begin the evening with song and candle blessings and close with the Kaddish and more song. I hope you'll join us for this unique way of experiencing the holiday! Rabbi Drorah Setel
