Two years ago today, a terrible tragedy befell the Jewish community of Pittsburgh. May the memories of all those who lost their lives that day be for a blessing.

A great article by CSS member Sharon Cramer about early voting: Precious life events offer thrills. Fireworks dazzle, births and weddings spark celebration, commencements summon euphoria. Another quietly thrilling option is available -- voting, which opens the door to pride in citizenship. Elections in 2020, in the time of Covid, are different. Many fear in-person voting. For the June primaries, absentee ballots were mailed to all individuals eligible to vote in primari...es, with no advance action required. In contrast, for the upcoming elections, voters will not automatically receive anything. Governor Cuomo recently approved a broader basis for the use of absentee ballots than in years past, but action is required. Voters can choose from among two voting options. Option 1: October 24-November 1, vote in person, early. New York State recently joined 37 other states to allow voting in advance of Election Day. In New York, polls are open on weekdays and weekends. In Erie County, all locations are open from for early voting, from noon to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, and noon to 6 p.m. on weekends. Information about the location of polling places is available at www.elections.erie.gov You may vote early at any poll site location you do not have to go to your regular poll site. Option 2: Vote on Election Day, November 3. If you choose to vote on Election Day, you must go to the poll site to which you have been assigned, where you normally vote. Polls will be open 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you are not sure of your site, you can find it at https://voterlookup.elections.ny.gov/ We recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, extending the right to vote to women -- a cause to which Susan B. Anthony devoted her life. She admonished us all -- Someone struggled for your right to vote. Use it. Take her up on her inspiration: do not squander a precious opportunity.

Prayers for our former rabbi, Jamie Arnold, and his family and community. They’ve had to be evacuated in the Colorado fires.
