Join us for our second session of Beyond Symbol: Culture + Reparations - Organizing Asheville on March 17, 4pm. Featuring Tashia Ethridge and Robert Thomas from the Racial Justice Coalition (@rjcavl) located in Asheville, North Carolina! Hear about how grassroots organizers secured city legislation formalizing a reparations process in Asheville, NC. In July 2020, national media broadcast that the Asheville City Council had approved reparations. Now there's concern that loc...al leaders are backing away from any substantive implementation. We'll be hearing from organizers from the Racial Justice Coalition on how they built support for reparations, frustrations they've encountered, ways they are mobilizing now, and how they've used culture and storytelling to organize in Asheville. http://www.fabnyc.org/reparationsnyc/ The event will also be live streamed via our Facebook page. #ReparationsNYC See more

FAB’s so pleased to be working with Ariana Allensworth and Dennis RedMoon Darkeem on two commissioned projects this spring. For the Lower East Side iteration of Staying Power, artist Ariana Allensworth (@arianafaye) will expand upon a collaborative, multidisciplinary art and research project that celebrates the people’s history of New York City public housing in the neighborhood through photography, personal collections, and interview with residents. The project offers c...ounter-narratives to the stereotypes surrounding the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) through the lens of residents raised and living in NYCHA Selected through FAB’s LES African and African-American Histories Open Call, we will work with Dennis RedMoon Darkeem (@redmoondennis) , an artist and educator of Yamassee Creek-Seminole Native American and African American descent, on a walking tour through the Lower East Side highlighting underrecognized Black and Indigenous histories in the neighborhood. We look forward to sharing more as these two artist projects develop! Photo Credit: Ariana Allensworth by Jeanette Spicer

At FAB, we understand the importance of cultural organizing (intersection of arts and activism), make a donation today so that we may continue to support local resiliency efforts all over the LES. This year we were able to organize, coordinate, and create a toolkit for the New York Memory Project, an effort in connecting with and learning from local elders in both recorded and unrecorded interviews We want to continue to partner with artists to raise awareness and empathy, ...and promote taking action when the Lower East Side is threatened. We hope you do too. Consider making a donation today to support us in our work in honoring and celebrating the cultural diversity of the LES! Thank you for any support you can give. http://ow.ly/dh9250CBY2G

#4thofjuly Profound gratitude for generations of Black leaders who with extraordinary determination and courage have sought to set us free. Because, as Fannie Lou Hamer said, none of us are free until all of us are free. #amazinggrace

Every year we honor those who have been chosen by our community for their work in preserving the vitality of the Lower East Side. Now more than ever is a time to think of our neighbors, families, groups, and organizers who fortify our community - always, but especially during times of crisis. This year, we encourage you all to submit a recognition that honors an effort made to go above and beyond as our neighborhood navigates COVID-19. These are our Heroes Next Door. https:/.../www.peoplesles.org/heroes-next-door/ #PeoplesLES #LESmonth #staystrongLES

Dear friends, we’ve all been watching the COVID-19 situation as it unfolds, and it’s abundantly clear that our city needs a chance to slow down the spread of this virus which means big changes in all of our lives. Like many others, we feel the only right option is to close our offices and our Dance Block program as well as suspend upcoming public events including NO HOUSING NO PEACE, which would have opened next week. Full refunds will be provided to cancelled Dance Block re...ntals, and NO HOUSING NO PEACE tickets can either be honored at a future performance or fully refunded. We will be working from home and available by email. We are hosting video-conferencing meetings. We’re looking at all the ways we can stay active and engaged with our community while understanding the need for social distancing to "flatten the curve." Thank you for your understanding in this stressful, strange time. We are thinking about you, your loved ones, our elders, our vulnerable, and wishing for your health and well-being. FAB Ryan, Patrick, Dakota, Imani, and Janeill <3
