We are attempting to create a list of former bakeries in Western New York. As you can see below, I had technical difficulties and the sections are somewhat discombobulated. As time passes, many of these may become completely forgotten. My father will be 83 this year, and I asked him to make a list. The pieces are below, but I will repeat his introduction here, thank you for reading.. THE BAKERIES OF WESTERN NEW YORK I GREW UP AROUND THE BAKING INDUSTRY. MY FATHER WAS A SUPPLI...ER OF FOOD INGREDIENTS TO MOST OF THE BAKERS IN WESTERN NEW YORK. I OFTEN ACCOMPANIED HIM AS HE CALLED ON HIS CUSTOMERS. I WELL REMEMBER THE MANY TIMES THAT WE STOOD IN FRONT OF A HOT OVEN AS THE BAKER WAS UNLOADING HIS BREAD AND ROLLS. I THINK THE AROMA OF FRESH BAKED GOODS IS ONE OF THE TRUE SENSORY PLEASURES WHICH WE CAN ALL ENJOY. A BAKER MUST BE CONSISTENT IN THE PRODUCTS HE PRODUCES. HE MUST BE CREATIVE IN THE PASTRIES THAT HE DISPLAYS IN HIS SHOWCASE. HE MUST BE ARTISTIC IN THE CAKES WHICH HE DECORATES. INDEED, IT IS A NOBLE PROFESSION. LET’S NEVER FORGET: THE BAKERS OF THE WORLD, FEED THE WORLD. I HAVE CREATED A LIST OF THE BAKERIES THAT OPERATED IN OUR AREA DURING MY MORE THAN FORTY YEARS SUPPLYING THE NEEDS OF THOSE BAKERS. SINCE THE FOLLOWING LIST IS MOSTLY FROM MEMORY, I KNOW THAT IT IS INCOMPLETE. MY APOLOGIES TO THOSE I HAVE LEFT OUT. THE LIST CAN ALWAYS BE REVISED. MANY OF THE BAKERIES WERE CLUSTERD IN CERTAIN SHOPPING DISTRICTS AROUND BUFFALO. AS THE COMMERCE IN THOSE AREAS DECLINED OR MOVED, SO TOO DID THE BAKERIES THAT SERVICED THOSE COMMUNITIES. THE MOVE TO THE SUBURBS, SUPERMARKET BAKERIES, AND ONE STOP SHOPPING IN OUR NEW ACCELERATED LIFE STYLES, ALL CONTRIBUTED TO THE DEMISE OF THE SMALL MOM AND POP BAKERY. I HAVE TRIED TO GROUP SOME OF THOSE BAKERIES INTO THE SHOPPING AREAS THAT EXISTED AT THAT TIME. See more
