History and some facts about Warwick, NY: The town contains three villages (Florida, Greenwood Lake, and Warwick) and eight hamlets (Amity, Bellvale, Edenville, Greenwood Forest Farms, Little York, New Milford, Pine Island, and Sterling Forest). The first people to live in the place we now call Warwick were Native Americans, inhabiting the area for about 12,000 years.... The French and Indian War ,from 1754 to 1764, saw battles in Warwick. During the Revolutionary Times, many of the present-day local historical landmark buildings were constructed: The Shingle House, oldest structure in the village of Warwick, in 1764, Baird Tavern in 1766, Hathorn house in 1773. One of the original Wawayanda patent holders, Benjamin Aske, named his farm land "Warwick", most likely after an area of England near his original ancestral home. During the American War for Independence, Warwick was the site of a Continental Army encampment. The Hudson River Chain was forged at Stirling Iron Works in Warwick, preventing the British Navy from sailing up the Hudson River. Bullets for Washington's armies were made at the Sterling Iron Works. In 1783, George Washington traveled through Warwick, stopping at Baird's Tavern and spending the night in the home of John Hathorn. The 1850 census for Warwick had 18 carriage and wagon makers, 28 cobblers, 9 tailors, 9 coopers, 6 tanners, 6 cabinet and chair makers, 2 basket makers, 3 weavers, 4 saddle makers, 3 brick makers, and a brass foundry. Warwick Valley Railroad became the first in America to use refrigerated cars to transport liquid milk. Warwick is the second largest township in New York State. Greenwood Lake is Orange County's largest lake. The Appalachian Trail passes through Warwick off Route 17A. Applefest attracts as many as 35,000 people each year. Founded in 1919, Greenwood Forest Farms was an early area retreat for African-American families. The name Edenville can be attributed both to the natural beauty of the area and to the neighboring presence of Mt. Adam and Mt. Eve. Florida took its name from the Latin word meaning "covered with flowers." William H. Seward, Secretary of State to Abraham Lincoln, born and raised in the village of Florida. Sterling Forest was the site of the first American rocket airplane flight that carried mail from New York to New Jersey on February 23, 1936. The Warwick Valley Dispatch was founded in 1885 by George F. Ketchum and is still in print today. Glenmere Lake is home to New York's last population of the endangered northern cricket frog. " A new law requiring all backseat passengers in a vehicle to buckle up took effect yesterday, November 1. Now, adult passengers along with the driver can be ticketed $50 if not wearing their seat belt. The new law also applies to adult passengers of ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft, outside of New York City. The simple fact is that seat belts save lives and prevent tragedies. It does not matter your age or where you sit in the vehicle. We want to raise awareness abo...ut the new law, and make sure people buckle up, said Senator David Carlucci D, New City), who sponsored the law. It is a common misconception by many adults that they do not have to wear their seat belt in the backseat because they think it is safer. However, AAA Northeast found an unbelted rear seat passenger in a vehicle accident is two times more likely to be killed, eight times more likely to be seriously injured, and two times more likely to kill a front seat occupant by becoming a projectile. In New York State, over the last decade, 296 people over the age of 16 have been killed, while unrestrained in the backseat of a motor vehicle."

"Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus has taken a seven-acre parcel in the hamlet of Sugar Loaf in the Town of Chester off the auction block and wants to acquire an adjacent 350 acres. The county executive would like to develop a county trail network in Scott’s Meadow. It goes from Sugar Loaf all the way over this little swamp next to the Tin Barn Brewery, and my long-term plan, if things work out, is to procure Sugar Loaf Mountain 350 acres and make it an outdoor hiki...ng destination, he told members of the Orange County Chamber of Commerce on a Zoom call Thursday. The mountain acreage is privately owned and Neuhaus said he would only move forward with his idea if all of the owners agreed to sell."

I did not know some of these. My favorite? "According to tradition, if a person wears his or her clothes inside out and then walks backwards on Halloween, he or she will see a witch at midnight."

Stuck in traffic on 17 westbound yesterday, I was looking at Legoland and my mind began to wander. Do you remember the little white farm house with the orange shutters that used to be there? You could easily see it from the road. August 4th 1992, Angelina Hopkins and Brenda Whiteside bodies were found at this farm house. The cause of death in both cases was determined to be severe blunt trauma to the face and head. Nathaniel White, a serial killer, in Orange county, woul...d eventually be found guilty of killing them along with 4 other women. Nathaniel White, born July 28, 1960, was active in the Hudson Valley during the early 1990s, White confessed to beating and stabbing six women to death while on parole. He had claimed to have found inspiration for his first murder while watching RoboCop 2: "The first girl I killed was from a 'RoboCop' movie... I seen him cut somebody's throat then take the knife and slit down the chest to the stomach and left the body in a certain position. With the first person I killed I did exactly what I saw in the movie." This first was White's first victim was Juliana Frank, 29, of Middletown, who was pregnant with her third child when she was killed on March 25, 1991. Her naked body was left on a set of abandoned railroad tracks in Middletown. This happened after White had been convicted of abducting a 16-year-old girl, but before he started his prison sentenceand police did not make the connection at the time. In a plea bargain that would later be heavily criticized, White had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for the abduction and would therefore be eligible for parole after just one year. White was paroled in April 1992 and returned to Orange County, New York. White's first victim after his parole, was the young niece of his girlfriend, whom he killed at the end of June. He then killed four others in July 1992. White was indicted by a grand jury on August 7 for the murder of Christine Klebbe. On September 9, the other five murders were added to the indictment. White was charged with six counts of second degree murder and pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. White was convicted on all counts on April 14, 1993 and sentenced by Judge Jeffrey Berry to 150 years to life. He is currently held at Elmira Correctional Facility. This Saturday is Halloween and it will have a full moon! According to hauntedplaces.org, the Hudson Valley is full haunted places. Here are some scary places to visit in Orange County: Oxford Depot Cemetery, Chester Among the many odd occurrences reported at Oxford Depot Cemetery are orbs of light, dark figures that may give chase, the sound of someone unseen whistling, and footsteps coming from behind visitors. Some orbs have shown up in photographs of the cemetery.... Silvio’s Italian Villa, Warwick Silvio’s Italian Villa Restaurant is housed in a building that originally dates back to the 1700s, was originally inhabited by a Revolutionary War veteran Levi Ellis. After several owners it was purchased by the Vail family, when tragedy struck. In 1972, Roy Vail’s sister was found murdered in 1972, and Roy was rumored to be a suspect. Ten years later, he committed suicide in the Peach Room. Witnesses say doors open and close, objects are moved, the apparitions of a little girl and a cat are seen, and much more. McGarrah Stagecoach Tavern Inn, Monroe Featured on several ghost-related TV shows, this historic inn from the late 1700s is one of the oldest buildings in town. Here you may see a ghost in a top hat and dark suit. The inn may no longer be in operation but may be offering private tours by appointment only; one site gives this phone number to set up an appointment: (845) 783-6206. Demarest Building, Warwick The Demarest Building, once called the National Hotel, was constructed in 1863 and was used as an inn and a meeting place for the townspeople. In the mid-1900s, the building was turned into apartments and the Demarest Bar, which closed in the early 1990s. It is now a complex of office rentals, boutiques and restaurants. Mysteriously, screams occasionally come echoing down from the top floor of the building, locals say. The source of the haunting is unknown. Downing Park, Newburgh A little boy's ghost has been seen sitting by Downing Park's lake, crying. Locals say he drowned here long ago. He also has been known to make bubbles in the water and scream when a child gets too close to the water's edge. Goshen Historic Track, Goshen Goshen Historic Track is said to be haunted by the spirit of a jockey and his horse, who both drowned in the nearby lake early 1900s. They’ve been seen riding along the lake or chasing visitors through the dirt-road trails; other witnesses say the clip-clopping of ghostly horse hooves has come from seemingly nowhere. Newburgh Masonic Temple One night at Newburgh Masonic Temple, students experienced some strange and unexplained phenomena: A chair slid itself across the floor, a hinged door began to swing, and disembodied men's voices were heard throughout the building.
