Stand with us to protect Queensbridge Sacred Garden! Please help this new community garden by signing their petition. Link in bio. From the petition organizer, Lauren Ashcraft: "41-09 - 41-13 btwn 12th and 21st in Long Island City has been a green lot of land where tree branches fall and decompose, dog feces sits there to attract flies and garbage builds up for as long as resident Lashawn Suga Ray Marston remembers. In 2013, he had a vision to change that. He contacted NYC...HA to request the use of this land for a community garden/dog park for his community. NYCHA referred him to NYC Parks. NYC Parks said they do not own the land and referred him to The Department of Transportation. The Department of Transportation referred him back to NYCHA. NYCHA then referred him back to NYC Parks. Frustrated and unwilling to allow his community to be neglected of this vision, he partnered with his neighbors, an award-winning architect, his City Council member, and they were preparing to guerilla garden. He had tires, paint, shovels and they were ready to start digging. However, one day they came out and the community’s tools and supplies were gone. Queensbridge’s future garden was stolen from them. 7 years later, we are backing Suga Ray and plan to start developing this garden *this year*. But first, we need support! We need elected officials, candidates, business owners and the people near and far to sign their names and stand with the Queensbridge community in this noble act of building the green space they so desperately need. Sign your name below to back our grassroots efforts so that we can protect this sacred garden from being stolen again."

Tools & resources for starting a guerilla garden in your neighborhood-- virtual discussion this Saturday at NYC Anarchist Book Fair. See bio link to register. Announcement below is from@resistance_is_fertile --- So the feds are claiming that NYC is an Anarchist jurisdiction in order to cut federal monies from our budget. We can expect even less funding for services and more environmental racism as the city tries to do more with less. The police have responded by escalat...ing violence and street arrests during recent I.C.E. protests. After yesterday’s Autumn Equinox, it is time to bring the hard lessons the COVID epidemic season has been teaching us into collective action across the city. This Fall, we will amplify#MutualAidand practice collective care as we enact the changes we demand in our individual and urban lives! Join us in a discussion about how to start a guerrilla garden in your own hood, this Saturday at 5pm w.@glopezsez’s at the virtual#AnarchistBookFairNYC#2020AnarchistBookFair#ReclaimTheCommons#LiberateTheLots#guerrillagardening#LoveInTheTimeOfCOVID#LOVEandRAGE@596acres@nyccgc@greenguerillas#BeTheChange See more

Nature knows no waste. The bees visited these sunflowers first and then the birds. Leaving the heads on the stalks even after the flowers have wilted gives time for the sun to dry and ripen the seeds, creating a feast for the birds. The ones here are empty of their seeds now, picked clean by the birds with some dropping down into the soil for next year's sunflower crop. What beauty in abundance! #sunflower #savethebees #savethebirds #nyccommunitygardens #giveback

With heavy hearts we mourn the passing of Linda Yang, long-time champion and board member of Green Guerillas, who passed away on April 20 at the age of 83. Linda was an avid gardener, author, and former New York Times columnist. She advocated vigorously for community gardens. Her keen wit, insight, and knowledge of plants were greatly valued at Green Guerillas and are already deeply missed. In honor of Linda's life, legacy and service to Green Guerillas, we are giving 10 frui...t trees to community gardens in her honor. A variety of apple, pear, fig, and peach. If your garden is in need of a fruit tree, or you know of one that is, please send us a DM or email at [email protected] Visit greenguerillas.org to read about Linda's life. #legacy #lifeofservice #greenguerillas #fruittrees #growingfood #ediblelandscape #community #communitygardens #nyccommunitygardens @ New York, New York

Community gardening in action. Proud and humbled to be a part of this movement in its many forms. The story of these microgreens growing kits starts at @redhookfarms, whose generous farmers donated boxes of seeds to us. We assembled a small group of volunteers to create 100 microgreens kits including soil, seeds, seed trays, and instructions for growing, for distribution by the @blaque_resource_network --an organization dedicated to uniting communities of color in Queens. Dur...ing the pandemic, they began distributing over 6,000 pounds of healthy food for free every week. This week, the microgreens kits will be part of the distribution, welcoming community members to build knowledge or go deeper in their experience of growing food. When Aleeia Abraham @leeia_music, Dianna Rose @hersustainablelife came to pick up the kits today, they gifted us with two boxes from their food distribution. We kept one with gratitude and for nourishment, and gave the other one back to the community at the #communityfridge down the block @playgroundcoffeeshop So grateful for the circle of #mutualaid and the power of #neighborshelpingneighbors Deep thanks to Green Guerillas volunteers Raha @rahabehnam, Riyana @reecurl, Matt & Liz @iamzebar who led this project. #foodnotbombs #communitysolidarity #buildcommunity #communityorganizing #communitygardens

Sharing this important message to community gardeners from the New York City Community Garden Coalition's President, Raymond Figueroa, Jr.: "I hope that these unsettling and righteously enraging times that we are all living through are also compelling you to draw out from deep within yourselves - your most heart- & soul-felt intentions for goodness - to bring your skills, your talents, and your energy to bear upon the burgeoning movement of Humanity's cries for healing and re...demptive transformation. Along these lines, I want to share with you a reflective opportunity for community gardens throughout the five boroughs and their members to organize Community Garden Vigils in gardens citywide all in honoring Black Lives Matter. Marion Yuen of Newkirk Community Garden reached out to me in this regard and, in subsequent conversation, we identified ways in which the vigils could be "timed" with the fortuitous convergence of a trifecta of grand events taking place this weekend, including: 1) Juneteenth on Friday, June 19th, 2020; 2) the Mass Poor People's Assembly and Moral March on Washington Digital Gathering on Saturday, June 20, 2020; 3) the Summer Solstice at 5:43 pm on Saturday, June 20, 2020. Whether a community garden chooses to post a banner or some other activity to express solidarity with the movement - we can let the occasion(s) of Community Garden Vigils in honor of Black Lives Matter serve to help us to inaugurate a season wherein we're consciously committed to engaging in cultivating and ultimately harvesting with a purpose - Justice and Peace - through our community gardens; and wherein we're consciously committed to cultivating and ultimately harvesting with a purpose - Respect for our MOTHER EARTH through our community gardens - the People's Commons! In whatever way the members choose to organize their respective Community Garden Vigils (and I certainly hope that they seriously consider doing so) let's remind them to wear masks and to practice physical distancing and to please photograph / videograph if they're comfortable doing so." -Raymond Figueroa, Jr. New York City Community Garden Coalition @communitygardens_nyc
