The Eastern Basin of Lake Ontario is home to some of the biggest and meanest smallmouth bass in the Northeast. Which is why I headed there for today's NY Fishin...g Adventure. Today's program mirrored what I did Friday. Graph the 29-32 ft zone find the perch & gobie balls on the bottom and drag a 1/2 oz football jig through it. Keep a tight line during the drag, feel the tap with slight resistance, reel down to meet the pressure & apply a steady sweep hookset as you continue reeling down to meet the fish. I had about half of the fish I hooked come to the surface and they'd jump two or three times during the fight in this 46 degrees water, now how cool is that It was a super fun day as I fished a 1/2 oz. Keitech Model II Football jig (grn pmp) dressed with a 2.8 Fat Swing Impact (Silver Flash). After that slowed a bit I went back over the same 250 yard stretch but instead of the rubber strand jig I used a plain (bare) 1/2 oz jig dressed a 3.3 Fat Swing Impact (alewive) I fished from 12:30 until 4pm landing 17 fish with me five best weighing 27.02 lbs. my big fish today was 6.32 lbs. I used TFO's Tactical Bass 710CB-1 (7'10" MH power rod) paired with a BPS 2.0 Carbonlite reel (8.3:1) spooled with 10 lb Cortland Masterbraid. The cool part about today is I shared this same general area with Bill Telesca who was there when I arrived. Bill started fishing around 7:30 dragging a 3/4 oz. Football jig that he pours himself and he closed his day out with 20 bass, his five best weighed 32.03 lbs anchored by a 7.49 lb thumper that I verified with my IGFA certified digital scales. Bill just wanted verifcation he'd indeed cracked the 7 pound zone. Just a super thick fish. So between Bill & I that was 59.05 lbs. for our 10 best fish. This place is simply amazing. This coming Tuesday is December 1st which marks the close of all bass fishing in Jefferson County waters until the season opener on June 19, 2021. Rest easy knowing these big girls are still out there waiting to meet you. I've enjoyed a fantastic 2020 bass season in the Eastern Basin and I can't wait for the 2021 season to begin.
