HHS ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB WORKS TO MAKE THE WORLD GREENER ... They are energetic and enthusiastic and they pursue their goals with a strong sense of purpose. Huntington High School Environmental Club members are striving to make the world a healthier, greener and more colorful place. The club is led by Carrie Kilgour (president), Tess Stanley (vice president), Laurel Bonn (treasurer), McKenna Buffa (recording secretary), Sarah Krisch (corresponding secretary), Nadeera Ali (histo...rian), Nina Varvatsas (administrative assistant), Jasjeet Kaur (social media coordinator) and fundraising coordinators Lauren Holly, Rachel Deegan and Sophia Segal. Science teacher Deborah Beck is the group’s faculty advisor. Club members have a full agenda for the last months of the school year, including work in the high school courtyard. The club is currently having a fundraiser selling tote bags, Ms. Ali said. The tote bags are $10 and we running out of stock! Our plans for the spring are to clean up Eli’s garden and plant flowers there as well. Following this we will also be cleaning and setting up the pond in the courtyard. We continue to have our monthly meetings and encourage others to still attend to discuss environmental issues. It’s not too late to get involved. Every student in the building is invited to join the organization and participate in its activities and learn more about environmental issues and possible solutions. The club’s Google Classroom code is h5rfmyn. Monthly meetings are held on Friday afternoons. Text its Remind code of @hhsenv19 to 81010. Our fundraiser has gone pretty well, Ms. Kaur said. We sold reusable bags and I think they almost sold out. A garden clean-up is currently being planned for Eli’s garden. We plan to add a few more plants and clean any leaves or trash out of it. Club members really do believe that little things can make a big difference. http://www.hufsd.edu/articles/2021/april/15d.html

HUNTINGTON ROBOTICS GATHERS STEAM ... Huntington High School’s robotics team is slowly gathering steam despite the limitations on its activities that the COVID-19 pandemic has required. The group met throughout the summer via Zoom with faculty advisors Omar Santiago and Brian Reynolds. The returning Blue Devils elected a new leadership team for 2020/21. Alex Frawley is the new team captain with Luke Rinaldi filling the post of vice captain. Sydney Cordeiro will be the chief b...usiness officer. Anthony Amitrano is the chief technical officer. Our Monday [Google Classroom] meetings are going very well and we have been teaching our members programming, presentation skills and CAD/3D design, Mr. Frawley said. We are an active team and we would like to encourage others to take advantage of these meetings to learn new skills. Once we have the go-ahead for in person meetings we will be in a great position to work on our robot, Smokey and enter competitions. In a recent report to the school community and its financial supporters, the Huntington Robotics executive team members said the FIRST Robotics organization is offering online competitions, including Infinite Recharge at Home, Game Design Challenge and Innovation Challenge, which give us the opportunity to show off our robot and display its technical and mechanical qualities to the judges, according to the teenage tech wizards. This will give our team the opportunity to become more efficient builders and thinkers. The team’s leaders said once high school clubs are greenlighted for in-person activities, Huntington Robotics will upgrade and refine its robot. This will give our team members hands-on experience with building and programming the robot other than just through the interactive CAD/3D design program, the group said. Huntington Robotics team members are also planning visits to Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School and other Huntington UFSD elementary school buildings to bring awareness of robotics/STEM to younger children the group’s community report stated. Due to the pandemic we are limited in numbers and resources, however this is a great opportunity for students to become involved and learn new skills, which they will use for years to come, Mr. Frawley said. Huntington Robotics is in the midst of an ongoing recruiting drive. Students interested in joining the Blue Devils can send a message to [email protected]. The Huntington Robotics parent organization is also looking for mentors to work with team members. Interested? Send a message to [email protected].

BLUE DEVIL BOYS’ BASKETBALL LOOKS FORWARD TO GROWTH ... When the Huntington High School boys’ basketball team takes the court on January 4 for the first day of official practice, the Blue Devils will be united in their desire to produce dramatic year to year improvements over last season. Head coach Jordan Ioviero enters his second season expecting the Blue Devils to be much more competitive than they were last winter when they were slowed by injuries.... The Blue Devil varsity returns juniors Dylan Coleman, Kevin Drake, Charlie Girimonti, Max Rentsch and Henry Vohs and seniors Adrian Brooks and Zachary Gordon. Tryouts will determine who wins the available roster spots on the varsity squad. Last season’s junior varsity team included Joe Algieri, John Chirico, Finn Cocoman, Elias Frazier, Harrison Krywak, Christopher Maichin, John Marziliano, Liam McDonald, Aidan McNulty, James Rosselli, Nicholas Sineno, Daniel McNulty, Kei Shan Miller, Za’Khie Ramos, Amari Huitt-May and Jayden Taylor. The Blue Devils lost Matt Girimonti, Omari Stephen, Lex Colato, Danya Danziger, Renato Erek, Jack Monahan and Michael Wright to graduation. Most of their roster positions will undoubtedly be filled with players from last year’s JV, but several newcomers could also be in the mix The team was expecting to participate in off-season spring, summer and fall leagues, but the COVID-19 pandemic prevented it. Ioviero is looking to build a championship program. Once the COVID-19 pandemic ends, he intends to increase outreach to Huntington’s elementary schools. Among the possibilities are clinics, intramurals and additional opportunities to play at halftime of varsity home games. Ideas to strengthen and make more competitive the program at J. Taylor Finley Middle School are also being discussed around along with the possibility of getting more students in the school involved in the sport. The main court and the two side courts in Louis D. Giani Gymnasium at the high school were renovated last summer with the floor being completely refinished. It features a brightened look with new markings. There are plans to refinish and repaint the walls, too. Improved side court lighting is expected to be installed, which will match what was put in place over the center court prior to last season. Work is also expected to be performed on the home and away side bleachers and moldings. We want to the kids and the community to fall in love with the sport, Ioviero said. We are working very hard to bring a championship to Huntington. The Blue Devils will play 12 league games with home and away contests against North Babylon, Smithtown East, Half Hollow Hills East, Copiague, Newfield and Smithtown West. http://www.hufsd.edu/articles/2020/november/05a.html

JUNIOR HANNA CARLSON ENJOYING HUNTINGTON EXPERIENCE ... Hanna Carlson is enjoying her junior year at Huntington High School, even while in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The teenager is taking delight in her classes and looking forward to the spring when she plans to play soccer for the Blue Devils. Ms. Carlson is a resilient young woman who always finds a way to be successful. She interacts well with her classmates and teachers and they genuinely like her. She is consid...ered a valuable asset to the high school and enhances the atmosphere in all of her classes. The teenager is especially interested in her Advanced Placement Biology and Psychology classes. Ms. Carlson is bright, articulate and inquisitive. She likes to learn new things and to explore how the world works. The teenager has many friends, but her closest ones include Ella Naima, Katie Browne and Gretel Cassell. She enjoys the social aspect of the high school and she’s always ready to help anyone in need. Ms. Carlson has also developed a productive mentoring relationship with social studies teacher Kaitlyn Hanft. She made me enjoy school because we had a close relationship, the junior said. The teenager is full of energy and enthusiasm. I am very excited for soccer to hopefully start up again soon, Ms. Carlson said. It’s my favorite sport. Ms. Carlson has some advice for ninth graders. For incoming freshmen it is very important to have good grades in all of your classes, she said. Always work hard and try your best. Don’t give up because things get difficult. It will all work out in the end, but in order to succeed you need the drive and to put in the effort. I would also tell freshmen to only surround yourself with the friends that make you happy and make you feel good about yourself. Don’t surround yourself with people you that will bring you down. Like many of her classmates, Ms. Carlson hasn’t begun to concentrate on the college application process just yet. At some point down the road she will compile a list of college possibilities, but she isn’t ready to do so right now. I’m not exactly sure where I want to go to school, but I am almost 100 percent sure that I am going to go to med school so I want to study exercise science in order to get my physical therapist license. With each passing day, Ms. Carlson gains in confidence. Her momentum appears unstoppable as she marches toward accomplishing her goals. Huntington has been the best experience, Ms. Carlson said. I made friendships that will last forever and I learned things I’ll never forget. http://www.hufsd.edu/articles/2020/november/04d.html
