The Village of Freeport honors the life and teachings of the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is important, in remembrance of Dr. King, to reflect the wisdom and teachings he bestowed upon the United States and the World. May we all learn and practice the many lessons and contributions he made to society.

I would like to thank Margarita Grasing of the Hispanic Brotherhood, Trustee Jorge Martinez, and the United Way, for their help in securing much needed airpurifiers for our seniors in the Village. With Covid-19, these purifiers will provide air filtration for them and their families. Working together, we can work toward reducing Covid-19 numbers in Freeport.

Yesterday, Mayor Kennedy and the Community Affairs division within the Freeport Police Department yet again delivered for Freeport. This time providing PPE supplies for small businesses within the village. Safety and care are of utmost importance and the Kennedy Administration will continue to deliver for all residents. Mayor Kennedy was highlighted by the New York State Conference of Mayor's for his accomplishments as its past President. Most notably, his statewide efforts to change the discovery reforms laws. Because of those efforts, Mayor Kennedy was able to offer tax rebates to all Village residents. The Article: NYCOM (New York State Conference of Mayors) 2020 Report... The dead of winter in Albany means it is state budget season, and 2020 was no different as the Governor proposed a $178 billion spending plan. NYCOM, under the leadership of our then-President Robert Kennedy, Mayor of the Village of Freeport, fought day and night for amendments to the expensive discovery reform mandates adopted in 2019. With Mayor Kennedy we travelled the state, hosted news conferences and met with state legislators to make our point that reforms were necessary and could be done without harming the rights of the accused. These efforts culminated with our Winter Legislative Meeting in mid-February, which turned out to be NYCOM's last in-person gathering of our membership for 2020. We successfully conveyed our views to the chairs of the Senate and Assembly committees on local government, and also debuted our "My Community, My Future" public advocacy campaign. When the state budget was ultimately adopted in early April, we were able to claim victory on a number of fronts, including fixing the discovery reforms, securing additional water infrastructure funding, and protecting AIM / CHIPS aid from cuts. From the Desk of Mayor Robert T. Kennedy: After speaking to the Governor's Office today, I want to reiterate that New York State, especially Freeport, is in the midst of the second wave of Covid-19. Covid infections have increased at a rate not seen since May. But we can stop the increase. It's within our power. Together, we can reduce the numbers of Covid-19 infections in Freeport. Please remember, the Village is handing out masks at Village Hall and at the Recreation Center.... If you or anyone you know needs a mask, please come and pick them up. If you need help getting masks, please call Mayor Kennedy's Office at 516-377-2252. We can beat Covid-19. Remember to plan where you are going to be. Stay away from crowds in excess of the Governor's mandated size, and above all else:

The Mayor's Office deeply regrets to announce the passing of retired State Supreme Court Judge Ralph Franco. Judge Franco courageously served his Country during World War II as a member of the United States Navy. When he returned to Freeport, his honor was a former Freeport Village Justice, Trustee, Deputy Mayor, Deputy Village Attorney, and member of various Freeport Boards and Commissions. To Honor Judge Franco's service to this Nation, and to Freeport, Mayor Kennedy requested all flags on Freeport Government Buildings be at half-staff until Monday. We are saddened to hear of his passing, and wish his family well during this difficult time. May his memory be a blessing.

Incorporated Village of Freeport 27.09.2020

At a press conference at Village Hall today, I was proud to announce that, because of our advocacy here in Freeport and throughout the State of New York, we were able to successfully lobby to amend the discovery laws and, in turn, alleviate the crippling financial impact that these New York State mandates would have had on our police department and Village. As President of the New York Conference of Mayors, I made this my top priority, for the residents of Freeport and my c...onstituents across the state. As you may remember, I informed you of an increase in your taxes in the Village of Freeport. Though we held the line on taxes in the past, with a 0% tax hike for the past seven consecutive years, we were saddened to have to break such an important streak. We raised taxes to the tune of just over 5% -- or $2.7 million Villagewide. When these requirements were reversed, it rendered this tax hike unnecessary. I am pleased to inform you that the Village of Freeport will be returning this money to you, the taxpayers. Every cent of it. Your checks should be going out in a few weeks. https://www.newsday.com//towns/covid19-freeport-1.50035767

Freeport Select Chorale Members Selected for NYSSMA All-State Chorus Two Freeport High School Select Chorale members were chosen to participate in the 2020 New ...York State School Music Association Conference All-State Chorus. Participation in the event, which will take place virtually, is the highest level in the state a student musician can achieve. Seniors Karla Martinez and Jasmine Quezada-Tejada, under the guidance of chorale director Monique Campbell Retzlaff, were selected for the 2020 All-State Chorus based on the scores they received when they were sophomores. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the selection process for 2020 included the results of the 2019 NYSSMA adjudications due to the canceled spring NYSSMA festivals. The All-State experience will be different than previous years with Karla and Jasmine virtually rehearsing with the other members of the All-State chorus in early December 2020. At the conclusion of scheduled rehearsals, the All-State Chorus will record a virtual concert. The District would like to congratulate both students on their outstanding accomplishments.

*****From the desk of Mayor Robert T. Kennedy**** Tonight, I am proud to present the eighth ZERO percent tax increase Budget for the Village of Freeport. This budget strikes a balance between providing top notch services, and fiscal responsibility to our residents without an increase in taxes. I would also like to thank the hardworking members of the CSEA, PBA and Freeport Fire Department for making this happen (as well as all of our Department Heads). The tax rate is $62.29...6 per One Hundred dollars of assessed valuation, a 4.96% reduction from last year’s budget and has not changed since I took office in April 2013. In these uncertain times, your money belongs to you, and not the government! Citing the Village's strong reserves, and that, "management has made a concerted effort to strengthen village finances while avoiding tax increases whenever possible...[and further that] Freeport's finances will remain healthy in the near to medium term as management continues to budget conservatively and actively seeks new revenue streams," Moody's confirms the "Aa3," rating. On November 13, 2020, Mayor Kennedy, along with Village residents, Village employees, and the Freeport Public Schools ROTC recognized Thomas Blount. Mr. Blount was a decorated Veteran, and a leader in the the Civil Rights movement in Freeport. It was the Village’s privilege to Honorarily name that portion of East Dean Street, in honor of Mr. Blount. His dedication to his Country and to his Village is inspirational, and shows that together there is nothing we can’t do.
