If you or somebody you know is struggling with unemployment or housing instability, rental assistance is available which you can access by calling 211 and speaking with a specialist at the 211/Lifeline Center. The City of Rochester and Monroe County have implemented a handful of programs designed to help tenants experiencing housing instability in the midst of the COVID pandemic. These include an Emergency Rent Assistance program which can cover back rent, as well as the Ten...ant Defense Project which provides all tenants with access to a free lawyer in court. A listing of programs can be found at www.CityofRochester.gov/EvictionPrevention Calling 211 is often the easiest way for tenants to get connected. Intake specialists will ask a series of questions about their living and employment status to help identify any support programs that they may be qualified for, including Emergency Rent Assistance. The specialist will help start their application and provide a handoff to the appropriate agency to complete their enrollment. The 211 line also recently implemented a callback option, providing callers a solution to avoid waiting on hold. The 211 hotline is also open 24 hours, and the phone lines may be less busy late in the evening or early in the morning.

Our Community Solar program is generating a lot of excitement, with nearly 500 sign-ups to date! While this is exciting, we’ve been made aware of promotional materials being sent to residents from private energy supply companies (ESCOs) which are not affiliated with the Town program advertising their own Community Solar programs. While we welcome anyone looking to reduce their environmental impact to consider their available options, the Town’s Community Solar program works exclusively with Monroe Community Power. If you are thinking about Community Solar and have questions about whether the provider you are considering is part of the town’s program, please feel free to contact Monroe Community Power at 244-0244

Nate Stone created the Town of Irondequoit's Facebook page, long before most other Towns even thought about it. In addition to that, he's built one of the best multimedia operations of any Town we know, and our government has been more transparent and, occasionally, entertaining because of it. Nate is off to another opportunity. We wish him well and we are grateful for his many years of service to Irondequoit!

On Tuesday, October 20th, the Irondequoit Town Board passed a proclamation to create the "Irondequoit Commission Advancing Racial Equity" or ICARE. This citizen-led commission will advise the Town Board to ensure that Irondequoit is a community where each individual is respected, valued, and cherished regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion or cultural identity. The resolution passed sets the expectation that the commission's membership will be comprised of a majority o...f persons of color. ICARE will be lead by three Co-Chairs who will work with the Town Board to appoint 12 additional Irondequoit residents who will help spearhead the commission's work of developing policies, programs, and best practices to address Economic Opportunity and Empowerment; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and Community Engagement. Now more than ever, it is vital that governments examine how their policies may perpetuate existing inequalities and take proactive steps towards establishing a more just and inclusive community, said Irondequoit Supervisor Dave Seeley. I’m proud of our Board’s commitment to racial justice and look forward to working in partnership with ICARE to ensure town government truly works for everyone who calls Irondequoit home. To learn more about ICARE and how you can apply, please visit: https://www.irondequoit.org/ICARE/

The Town has been made aware of several coyote sightings in the areas along the northern end of Oakview Dr and along the Oakview trail. We have reached out to NYS DEC, but in the interim, residents should be aware of their surroundings while utilizing the trail, especially at sunset and during the night, and keep all pets on leashes while outdoors. If you see a coyote, the DEC recommends taking an aggressive posture - stand tall and hold your arms out to look large. If the coyote lingers for too long, then make loud noises, wave your arms or throw a stick or stones in their direction. If you observe "bold" or aggressive coyote behavior, please report it to DEC's Wildlife Division by calling 585-226-5380. For more information on coyote conflict, please visit: https://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6971.html
