'The Offing', 2021 (currently on view at Mid Wales Arts), is just the latest of Robert Davies’ large scale drawing pieces. The artist has previously focused on animals, including prize racehorses and farm animals. Common to much of this work has been a concern with the way animals are objectified within human systems of value and exchange, whether in the fields of sport or food production. These three images exemplify the twin poles of this body of work; on the one hand, Kau...to Star, a prize race horse and two-times Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, and on the other, Curly the sheep and Bluebell the pig, two farm animals deemed surplus to requirement that were rescued from certain slaughter by the Farm Animal Sanctuary, Middle Littleton, Worcestershire. Davies gives each of these animals equal treatment: the ennobling side-on view of George Stubbs and classical animal paintings. Large scale and remarkably detailed, each hair is delineated, each subtle variation in skin observed, and each muscle definedto accentuate the similarities between these animals and celebrate their glory. Robert Davies' tools of the trade in the completion of his recent large-scale diptych drawing 'The Offing'. 2H through 6B: a formidably sharpened set of Staedtler Lumograph pencils... and a shot of the left panel of the piece in-progress toward the end of last year. Robert Davies will be debuting his new work 'The Offing' as part of a group exhibition at the Maesmawr Gallery in Wales, opening April 15th, that focuses on the climate crisis, and includes contributions by over 40 artists from around Europe. 'The Offing' reflects Davies’ longstanding concern with science, climate change, and humankind's relationship to the natural world. The large-scale diptych in pencil on paper depicts, on the left panel, a sky roiled by a gathering storm ...over Nant y Moch, near the artist’s studio in west Wales; and on the right, a stunningly detailed rendering of a dead bumble bee. The Maesmawr Gallery is part of the Mid Wales Arts Centre, housed in a building that dates back to 1526 that hosts exhibitions, a sculpture hall and park, events, and workshops. Lia Cook is currently taking part in the exhibition ‘Building Bridges: Breaking Barriers’ at San Francisco non-profit Ruth’s Table. The artist is showing work from her Su Series of woven cotton and rayon; these pieces are based on an image of the artist as a child superimposed with networks of woven lines that provide an analogue for the neural networks that fire off during the process of facial recognition (as well as in our encounter with art). Read more here: https://bit.l...y/3sJuh8w Cook’s work will also be included in prestigious museum exhibitions ‘Subversive, Skilled, Sublime: Fiber Art by Women, opening April 22 at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, and in ‘With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 19721985’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
