Our online viewing room for Robert Polidori: Total Gnosis Enigma is now live! Explore the works here: https://bit.ly/3ejhvYc The exhibition features the artist’s large-scale color photographs of the ancient frescoes found among the ruins of Pompeii, Italy. Depicted in many of the works in the series is the Villa dei Misteri, a well-preserved dwelling on the outskirts of the city famous for its exquisite frescoes clustered in one room. These artworks, originating from 7060 B...C and restored between 201315, are among the best known of the relatively rare survivals of Ancient Roman painting and are understood to portray the rites of a young woman as she is inducted into the mystical cult of Bacchus. Total Gnosis Enigma opens at 297 Tenth Avenue this Thursday, April 22 and will remain on view through May 15. Today we are wishing a happy birthday to artist #BernarVenet. Known for his monumental metal sculptures, as well as his material exploration of coal, asphalt, and tar, for which he first gained recognition in the 1960s, Venet has continually committed to a process-based investigation into the physical materials he deploys, along with the mathematical and philosophical implications of form and line. In 2019, Kasmin presented Indeterminate Hypothesis, an exhibition featuring ...five gargantuan sculptures composed of raw bars of steel, each of which form unscripted configurations. The resulting spirals of tightly wound, inextricable loops of industrial material open a doorway to fundamental principles such as indeterminacy, chance, accident, unpredictability, chaos and, even, incompleteness, says the artist. Don't miss our Barry Flanagan exhibition in the #KasminSculptureGarden, which closes this weekend. Representing significant examples of the artist’s later work featuring his signature motif of the hare, the exhibition is viewable from The High Line Large Monument (1996), pictured here, draws on the work of Auguste Rodin, in an homage to the monumental Gates of Hell (18801971). Dr. Jo Melvin, Director of the Estate of Barry Flanagan, says of the sculpture: It has a material ...and visceral quality that responds to Rodin’s handling and uses a tactile sensibility to create an inventive transformation of his composition. [...] Rodin’s angst-ridden Three Shades become three virile dancing Nijinski hares, modelled in clay and using Rodin’s own triumphant subject of the celebrated dancer as a refutation in the face of the gates of hell." Matvey Levenstein's delicate and exquisitely rendered paintings explore themes of history and representation. His paintings and works on paper are filtered through the most traditional painterly genresthe landscape, the still life, and the portraitand are imbued with a distinctly literary sensitivity. Working with a limited palette on toned grounds, Levenstein’s distinctive compositions are characterized by the layers of paint built up and scraped back slowly and meticulou...sly over many months, and by their foregrounding of nature in all its dramatic variety: the looming power of a stormcloud, tree branches dissecting a winter sky, or more quietly, a vase of cut flowers sitting on a glass table. In September, an exhibition of new work by Levenstein will go on view at our 509 West 27th Street location. "When I didn’t know what color to put down, I put down black. Black is a force: I used black as a ballast to simplify the construction. #HenriMatisse Our current exhibition, Matisse in Black and White, focuses on the artist's use of the achromatic colors. Comprising some twenty-five rigorously selected artworks, the exhibition aims to facilitate what one might term slow looking, a fundamental principle that informed and nourished Matisse throughout his long career. ... Today we are thinking of #StuartDavis, who was born on this day in 1892. Over the course of his prolific career, which spanned the early 20th century through the post-war era, Davis developed a distinct visual language that fused Cubism and high-art with his own pioneering motifs of consumerism and the syncopated rhythms of jazz. By the mid 1920s, already well known for his use of vivacious color, Davis started executing compositions in black and white and continued to utili...ze a restrained and meaningful vocabulary of shapes. In 2018, Kasmin presented Lines Thicken: Stuart Davis in Black and White, which highlighted his mastery of composition and line. "Davis took drawn line not for a walk, in the stated manner of Paul Klee, but for canters and gallops, with any willing viewer delightedly astride," wrote Peter Schjedahl in a review of the exhibition. Driven by an enduring fascination with the materiality of paint, #IanDavenport's signature technique delivers elegant vertical lines down tilted panels into rich puddles of color. The artist's control is evident in the carefully composed series of colors that populate his paintings, which are experiments in color relationships guided by his intuition and mastery of the subject. Davenport often uses the colors in historical work as a reference point to initiate his own color ...sequences and explorations of movement, surface and light. In so doing, he questions how color gives shape to a picture, helping to structure the background and foreground in representational pictures, and produce rhythm and dynamism in abstract art.
