Happy birthday to our own, Dr. Allen! Did you know she is from Jamestown, NY? She completed both her undergraduate and medical degrees at SUNY schools (JCC, Stony Brook and University at Buffalo). Once completing her training, Dr. Allen wanted to return home to take care of the women in our community. ... She has been practicing at Lane Women’s Health Group since 1997. That’s 24 years- making Western New York her hometown! When she is not taking care of patients, Dr. Allen enjoys exercising outdoors including crew, hiking and cross country skiing. She loves to keep stress-reduction and health a priority in her life. Lanes Women’s Health is grateful for the expertise and compassion Dr. Allen brings to our practice as we continue to provide exceptional care for our patients.
Check out these tips for keeping your bladder healthy: Drink plenty of water. Strive to drink 6 to 8 cups of water each day. Cut down on the amount of caffeine and alcohol you drink - these may upset your bladder. Limit your intake of coffee, tea or cola as these can heighten bladder activity and lead to leakage.... Women should sit to go to the toilet they should not hover over the toilet seat. Take your time when on the toilet so that your bladder can empty - if you rush, and do not empty your bladder fully, over time, you could get a bladder infection. Stay away from foods that bother the bladder. Some foods can worsen incontinence. Skip foods like chocolate (also a source of caffeine), as well as spicy or acidic foods like tomatoes and citrus fruits. Keep your pelvic floor muscles strong with pelvic floor muscle training. Stop smoking. It is of great value to stop smoking for your bladder health - using tobacco is a major cause of bladder cancer. Do you need to make some lifestyle modifications after reading this list? Your bladder health is worth it!

Who needs a mammogram? According to current guidelines, women who are at average risk for developing breast cancer should begin regular mammogram screening starting at age 40. However, women with certain risk factors, including a personal or family history of breast cancer, may need early or more frequent mammograms than others. Additionally, patients who experience suspicious physical signs or symptoms of breast cancer may need a mammogram to further clarify the possibilit...y of disease. Risk factors and signs that may mean you need a mammogram to include: Personal history of breast cancer Family history of breast cancer BRCA gene positive First-line relative with breast cancer or ovarian cancer Palpable lump or other sign/symptom of breast cancer Change in breasts During your annual wellness visit, it is important to discuss any possible breast cancer risk factors you may have, as well as alert them to any changes in your breasts since your last visit. Need to schedule a visit? Give us a call! (716)484-9194
September is Menopause Awareness Month. Menopause is a significant body change that all women will experience as they age. This can be a challenging, but manageable time for women. Today’s topic: P O S T M E N O P A U S E... This phase includes all the time after menopause, and still manages to muster up a surprise or two. Due to the continued decrease in estrogen levels during this time, symptoms like dryness and hot flashes may linger.

Congratulations to our very own, Deb Arndt! Her career was honored by dedicating a portrait of her to be permanently showcased at UPMC Chautauqua. She was honored to be recognized as the first non-physician (midwife) to be granted admitting privileges.
Do women still need contraceptive protection in their 40s if they want to avoid pregnancy? To many, the answer is yes, absolutely! Since the median age of menopause is approximately 51 years of age in North America, but can vary from ages 40 to 60 years, and the opportunity for a pregnancy to occur during this time is still possible. Be sure to talk to us about contraception options for women over 40.

Vaccination is particularly important for people who are at high risk of serious complications from influenza, including pregnant people. Getting vaccinated dur...ing pregnancy can protect a baby after birth from flu before the baby is old enough to receive their own vaccine because the parent passes antibodies onto the fetus during pregnancy. September is PCOS awareness month. Call for an appointment with one of our providers so we can help you with this very treatable disorder.
Have you scheduled your annual visit? Your overall health will benefit from an annual visit to your gynecologist. It's not just about STD screening and paps. Breast exams may detect breast cancer more effectively than self-checks, and pelvic exams can turn up life-saving information. Come prepared for your appointment. Know when your last period started, the medications you've begun or stopped taking, and any other changes in your health since your last visit. Also bring up family medical records too so your doctor knows your family medical history.
Wellness Tip: Let’s get moving! Your body is meant to move! Regular physical activity can make you feel and look better and can improve your mood, help you sleep better, and help keep your weight under control. It also can increase your libido. Physical activity does not need to be strenuous. Try walking, biking, or swimming but if you haven’t been active, check with your doctor before starting.... See more
