When our friends over at Mad Dog Service told us they have an ICON 4x4 Design Bronco in desperate need of a big upgrade we were happy to help. The truck has a F...ord 5.0 liter engine and the top is almost never on it. This truck came equipped with 2 pairs of 5.25 speakers, a 5 channel amp and subwoofer mounted in an infinite baffle situation. Because the truck is so noisy, the client could barely hear the audio system. Our goal was to create an audio system that can be heard with the Bronco moving at speed, top off. Because ICON fabricates beautiful trim panels with speaker provisions for 5.25 speakers we had our work cut out for us. The client wished to retain the panels so we needed to add to them. Our solution was to fabricate 4 pods to mount to the panels and hold 2 pairs of Hertz HMX 8 marine speakers. We designed simple pods to match the shapes of the wheel wells and cut the templates with our laser cutter. Everything was transferred to 1/2 PVC to be completely waterproof should the client ever get caught in the rain. We also coated the pods with UPOL Raptor liner to match the interior of the truck which is also sprayed. The pods are bolted in using stainless steel fasteners. We laser engraved the Bronco horse onto the acrylic face plate of each pod for an added custom touch. We chose an ARC Audio amplifier intended for motorcycles due to its compact size and 600w power output. The amp was mounted under the passenger seat on a laser cut acrylic piece and elevated on plastic stand offs just in case the Bronco ever takes on water. All cabling was covered in braided sleeving and neatly ran under the truck. For a head unit we went with one of our trusted Sony units. Good clean output as well as a nice EQ to dial in the fine tuning. We cleaned up the wiring under the console and added disconnects to make I completely serviceable. The USB 2 cable was routed inside the console and a custom mount was fabricated with the Bronco silhouette on it. This truck is now loud and crystal clear. Unfortunately because it’s 30 degrees and there isn’t a top on it I wasn’t about to test it on the highway, but take my word for it. It’s LOUD and now has a system that keeps up with the rest of the vehicle...
