Give your mind and body a break so you can hit the refresh button. Are you struggling trying to keep your sanity throughout COVID-19? Just remember that amidst all of this chaos and panic, there’s YOU. Your heart, your needs, your spirit and your wellbeing. Keep in mind that there are plenty of ways to cut yourself some slack and refocus to give yourself a break. 1. - Both staying connected and up to date on the world wide pandemic is important yes, but it is so easy to get caught up in the... chaos that you end up feeling discouraged and scared. 2. - This does not have to be a huge endeavor. Find a reason to step outside at least once a day. Check the mail, take out the garbage, or take the dog for a short walk. Space chores throughout the day so that you get fresh air and a fresh perspective periodically rather than all at once. 3. - Stress can lower your immune system, affect your sleep and create tension in your body. Meditation and mindfulness exercises are small ways that you can reduce your stress levels. 4. - Working from home? Be sure to set up a work space that is separate from your living area/ family space if you can. Stick to your work hours and try not to exceed that schedule. If you or someone you care about is going through a difficult time, please take advantage of these resources: The Madison County Mental Health Department has a 24-hours a day crisis line at (315) 366-2327. Our biggest defense against COVID-19 is a vaccine. In the coming days, the FDA is expected to approve the vaccine, and then a New York State review panel will review it as well. By next week, hospitals and nursing homes across the state will begin receiving the first vaccine shipments for distribution. We know many people have questions about the vaccine. We here at Madison County will be doing our best to keep you informed about the vaccine and its as well as about the di...stribution process. Please watch this video message from Dr. Seelan Newton, Madison County Department of Health Medical Director, as he begins to answer some questions surrounding the vaccine. Check out this FAQ from the CDC https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/faq.html. Additional information will be coming out in the coming days and weeks from NYS and the federal government. We will work hard to keep our community informed.

From October through March, doctors' offices, urgent care centers, and emergency rooms are flooded with patients sick with the flu. People age 65 and older, children younger than 5 years, pregnant women, and people with certain health conditions like diabetes and heart disease are at greatest risk of getting very sick from the flu. While everyone age 6 months and older should get a flu shot, it is especially important for these high-risk groups to get vaccinated against the f...lu. The good news is that with a flu shot, people who are young and healthy can help protect people in these high-risk groups from the flu. The more people are vaccinated for the flu, the less likely it is for the disease to be spread to others. With COVID-19 also spreading, getting a flu shot is more important than ever to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community. Even while wearing a face mask, make sure you and your family wash your hands often and get a flu shot. To protect your family from COVID-19, limit the number of people you all come into close contact with. (Source: CDC) Call your doctor’s office, stop by your local pharmacy, or call the Madison County Health Department to make appointment to get your flu shot at 315-366-2848.
