Dear Friends and Donors, A'salamalaikum! First of all, the deepest gratitude to you for your generous donation to MCN's campaign to help support the families who have been affected by the tragic Bronx apartment building fire. This event has shaken us all. It also brings about the painful reminder of the inequities in which we live that have caused this terrible situation. I share with you a poem written by our Program Manager, and leader in her respective Gambian community, ...Ms. Kujegi Camara I want to take a moment to update you on what we're doing on the ground to help the families of the victims. MCN has three team members who are working directly with families, currently stationed at Monroe College. Ms. Ajifanta Marenah, our Advocacy Coordinator, Ms. Kujegi Camara, Program Manager, and Ms. Adamah Bah, our Immigrant Rights Coordinator, have served as bridges between the families (who overwhelmingly are from the West African/ Gambian community) and city agencies in helping provide translations and connecting them to the right resources. All the while, they are advocating for the city to provide long-term housing solutions -- as the families do not wish to return to that building -- and access to public benefits and immigration services. Our team has assessed the needs of the families and we've come up with a plan to distribute the generous donations that have come in here. The best means of support right now is through direct cash assistance so that families can pay for short-term decent housing, household items, food, and also the disruption in jobs/incomes due to the loss of housing. We are also going to pack a duffel bag full of supplies/donated clothing/etc. to give out to families in the coming weeks. We will establish an intake form for the cash disbursements to help keep track. THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for supporting our community in this time of need. Thank you for trusting MCN with your generous donations. We will continue to keep you posted. Please continue to support and share our campaign through the link: https://www.launchgood.com//bronx_fire_emergency_fund__192

Led by our Muslim Youth NYC leaders from the Al-Noor Islamic Academy, our youth discussed a topic that has many misconceptions and stigmas associated with it. Thanks to our incredible panelists Hillside Islamic Center, Sauti Yetu Center for African Women , Women for Afghan Women, we were able to dispel some of those misconceptions and clarified for many how our faith teaches us to stop violence against our partners and children. October is domestic violence awareness month. Student leaders, Mehrun Ahmed and Mahir Azam have organized a virtual panel on domestic violence for Saturday, October 24 at 12:00pm. The purpose of this virtual event is to engage the Muslim community in a discussion around domestic violence. Spousal violence is a controversial and often unspoken issue in the community. By engaging in conversation with an imam and leaders of community-based organizations, we hope to dismantle misconceptions and the stigma. We’re calling on young people to help us distribute 200 of these re-usable tote bags to the community! Pass them out to bodegas, delis, supermarkets, community centers, mosques, and friend and families! Enforcement of the ban on single-use plastic bags will take effect statewide on October 19. The legislation took effect March 1 but hasn't been enforced, in part because of the pandemic. DM us or email us at [email protected] for more information on how you can distribute these totes and take some home!
