The entire New York City Opera community is very sad to learn of the passing of Paul Kellogg this morning in Cooperstown, NY. Paul was a visionary in the opera world who masterfully led City Opera from 1996 to 2007 during a period of incredible change for the company and the city. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, Kellogg’s decision as General Director to continue as planned with the season-opening performance on September 15th was lauded by Anthony Tommasini of The Ne...w York Times as the most meaningful day of music in 2001. During his tenure as General Director, Paul oversaw several world premiere productions of American operas and 62 new productions total. Paul was also the General Director of Glimmerglass Opera from 1979-1996 and the Artistic Director for another decade. The opera world has lost a giant of the industry and his impact will be felt into perpetuity. We, along with the Glimmerglass Opera community and the entire opera world, mourn this considerable loss and will cherish his memory forever. Photo by Marty Umans.

Buona Pasqua a tutti! Whether or not you celebrate Easter, all opera lovers can celebrate Cavalleria Rusticana, the great Mascagni opera that takes place on Easter Sunday. Join me in a tradition and listen to this historic 1940 recording conducted by Mascagni himself (he also provides a spoken introduction) and featuring Lina Bruna Rasa, Beniamino Gigli, Gino Bechi, and Giulietta Simionato. My personal favorite.... Enjoy and stay safe, Michael Capasso, General Director

All of us at New York City Opera are incredibly shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Antoine Hodge after a long battle with COVID-19. Antoine was not only a beautiful singer, but also a beloved colleague and friend. His death leaves a huge emptiness in the hearts of so many who loved him. Antoine lent his glorious instrument to NYCO many times including in productions of L’amore dei tre re and La Cenerentola. Our thoughts go out to his family and everyone who knew and loved Antoine. He will be truly and dearly missed.

All of us at New York City Opera mourn the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Her devotion to opera was only outdone by her devotion to the Constitution and her service to the American people. I had the great honor to meet Justice Ginsburg when she presided over the wedding of my friend and NYCO Composer-in-Residence, Tobias Picker to Dr. Aryeh Stollman. At the reception we were able to chat. She went on about how she was a frequent attendee at City Opera when she was liv...ing in New York and how much she loved the company. In the coming days, many words will be written about this great lady and her long and extraordinary career. However, the opera world will miss her as well. The opera world will also be jealous, for tonight, she gets to hear Caruso. Rest in peace. NYCO General Director, Michael Capasso
