Synopsis In Italy at the end of the 19th century, a historical phenomenon is underway: hundreds of thousands of Italians leave their land in search of bread and work. Monsignor Scalabrini realizes that the phenomenon is reaching worrying dimensions, with often dramatic implications, and for this reason, having become Bishop of Piacenza, places emigration at the center of his pastoral commitment. Just for Italian immigrants, he founded the Congregation of San Carlo, and in order for his missionaries to have support in America, he asked Francesca Saverio Cabrini to dedicate herself, along with her religious sisters, to this new mission and to leave for New York. Francesca is very indecisive: accepting means giving up her missionary dream in the East where since she was a child she wanted to travel in the footsteps of Saint Francesco Saverio. But, confirmed by Pope Leon XIII, Francesca will accept the mission to the new world. It is March 31, 1889, when Francesca disembarks with a group of nuns in New York. But, here nothing you thought you could find is ready: not a house, not schools, not an orphanage. The one who had to maintain it, the Countess of Cesnola, wife of the director of the Metropolitan Museum, seeks to manipulate it for her personal interests. And, above all, Francesca collides with the harsh reception of Italian immigrants, who have become the scum of society. Despite all the initial adversities, the persistent and enterprising character supported by a lively intelligence and unwavering faith, even in the face of the toughest tests, will help Mother Cabrini to carry out her mission concretely and effectively, which will lead her to found 67 institutions in the world, including Columbus Hospital. Mother Cabrini is the first American citizen to be canonized.

But just as our daily routines have been swept away by the pandemic, so too has the annual routine of the Encounter been replaced by great uncertainty. .... On the assumption that the next Encounter will not happen in the same format as in the past (either because of social restriction or the extreme difficulty to raise the funds we would need), feel free to send us comments on the statement below as well as suggestions about how the Encounter could take place in non-traditional formats (e.g. partially or entirely online, or even an entirely novel kind of event), and topics, exhibits, and speakers related to the statement below. . It is a challenge that we embrace, and invite you to embrace with us, in order to obey the call contained in what is happening. The pandemic has swept away our daily routines, jeopardized our health and economic security, and taken away lives and livelihoods. With no clear end in sight, it has filled our days with uncertainty and discomfort, often leaving us feeling helpless and afraid. At the same time, it has also elicited the best in us: an urgency to respond, solidarity with those in need, admiration for caregivers, and a new appreciation for human relationships. As the past seems to be a different world and the future remains opaque, we are all waiting and asking: How long will this last? Will we ever go back to normal? Is a vaccine on the horizon? If so, when? Are physical and economic survival really at odds? What can I do to help? . No matter what comes next, this circumstance has brought to the surface even more radical questions: What is it telling us? Is there meaning in all of this? What can we truly depend on? Can we live
