For many, financial hardship has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Housed at our Long Island Community Foundation, the Long Island Racial Equity Donor Collaborative is providing $175,000 to seven nonprofits working with Black Long Islanders to attain financial and job security. Marcia Ashman created a fund in The New York Community Trust to help children, including young Native Americans. For more than 20 years, we’ve been making grants to nonprofits to continue her commitment to young people. Recently, we made a grant from her fund to The Language Conservancy to teach young Native American New Yorkers to speak and write in Lakota so that this endangered indigenous language can live on.
To help older New Yorkers through this pandemic, we need to fully understand what they are going through. This article by The New York Times Neediest Cases Fund sheds light on one story of suffering. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, sanitation workers stayed on the job. The Sanitation Foundation used a grant from our COVID-19 Response & Impact Fund for PPE to keep these workers safe.
