October is Pedestrian Safety Month and the Orange County Transportation Council reminds drivers to obey traffic laws around school buses. A national survey conducted by the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services found that in 2019, more than 95,000 motorists ran school bus stop arms in one day! Keep kids safe around the school bus by always slowing down and watching out for children walking or bicycling to school in neighborhoods with school zones. Visit www.nhtsa.gov/road-safety/pedestrian-safety for more information about pedestrian safety.

With flu season approaching, Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman is reminding and encouraging residents to get a flu shot. The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year. https://vpro.io/share/5f8f4521afa14501761660b8

Congratulations to Orange County Historian Johanna Yaun, who has been inducted into the Daughters of the American Revolution Quassaick Chapter, DAR. DAR is a women’s service organization dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, patriotism and honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War. DAR members must be able to prove ancestry from a Revolutionary war soldier. Yaun’s ancestors include Corporal David Kellogg of Massachusetts and Dr. John Frederick Aubrey, ...a surgeon from Connecticut, who marched to Quebec with Benedict Arnold in 1775. The Quassaick DAR Chapter is one of three in Orange County. The others are the Minisink Chapter and Old Mine Road Chapter. The Quassaick Chapter was founded at Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh in 1893, less than three years after the parent organization was created, making it one of DAR’s oldest chapters.
