For those of you who might have: Geriatric horses Arthritic horses Horses that have trouble lying down or getting up Horses that are not getting quality... REM sleep Here is an easy way to help your horse. Huge thanks to Tiffany and Matt Durham at Steinbeck Equine for the idea. A few bags of mini-flake or shavings banked against a stall wall gives these guys an easier way to let themselves down, sleep, and have enough support and confidence to get back up easily. A combination of bedding particle sizes seems to hold more air and makes it simple to fluff up with a rake. This horse has chronic pain due to severe arthritis in his hocks, along with lumbar bone spurs and SI issues. Last fall, arthritis in his knees flared, and he stopped lying down due to restricted range of motion. As a result, he wasn’t giving his joints a break, or getting his REM sleep and he really began to suffer. Tiffany suggested building him a shavings couch, and it made a profound difference in his quality of life. He knew immediately how to use it and will allow himself to perform a controlled fall into the couch. The bank allows him to lie either laterally or sternally without having to fold his forelegs. He’s back to getting his REM sleep and his whole outlook on life has changed so much for the positive. The couch has been installed for two months now, and the horse has not spread it around or soiled it. I’ve only had to augment the base, as you would a normally bedded stall. So for $50 - $70 in initial investment of shavings you might make a profound difference in your horse’s quality of life! EDITED to add: Directly from Dr. Durham, who originally gave me the idea: Great discussion here. Those who point out that this is not a new idea are, of course, correct. I learned about this 25 years ago, and it wasn't a new idea then. But I think it is important to distinguish between a banked stall and a couch. Shavings banked part way up the wall is certainly good practice to help prevent casting. But, a couch is deep bedding extending a few feet from the wall, and a few feet deep, as Julie Rogers has done here. Slightly banked shavings don't really do it for the horse who has trouble getting up &/or down. A couch allows them to have a controlled descent and makes it easier to return to standing.

It is important to broaden the definition of the word "equitation" beyond what 15-16-17 year olds do to demonstrate style in some show ring. Equitation is the a...bility of a rider to be in the right place at the right time to allow the horse as best as possible to use its body unimpeded by the rider. This is true for all gaits, all disciplines, all speeds, all terrains, over jumps, on the flat, anything that involves humans riding horses.

Platinum Stables 09.07.2020

When a course designer places jumps, she does not simply plunk them down at random. This is because there are what are called "distances" between fences based u...pon where a horse normally takes off from in front of a jump, where it lands after the jump, and the normal length of each stride between the jumps. Now, these are not cast in stone. A 17 hand horse and a 14 hand pony may be in the same class, and what works for one may not be easy for the other. But course designers normally build for the middle range, and those distances are well established after millions of of tries by hundreds of thousands of horses over several centuries. So, here is some basic math, based upon "normal" distances. It is normal for a cantering horse to take off six feet in front of a fence, and normal to land six feet after the fence. It is normal for a cantering horse to have a twelve foot stride. So---A one stride in and out will be placed at 24 feet. 6 feet for the landing, 12 feet for the stride, 6 feet for the takeoff. 6+12+6=24. 2 strides=36 feet 3 strides =48 feet 4 strides =60 feet And so on. Learn this math, and learn how to walk distances by setting some known distances, and walking and walking until you have it. Yes, there will be variations to "normal." A horse will not need to stand back 6 full feet from a tiny two foot fence, nor will that trajectory land him six feet beyond. A hurdle horse racing at 850 meters a minute at a leaning brush fence may leave from eight feet away, and have plenty of scope to cover the longer distance. But course designers don't build for the exceptions. And, if they do, your ability to walk distances will clue you in, so that you can adjust accordingly. If you are involved in a sport which involves jumping, and you don't know this math, or you are unable to accurately walk the distance between jumps, you can either learn it or remain ignorant, a simple choice----- Now, trotting gymnastics distances are NOT THE SAME. Those require different math--- We can talk about those another time----

Limportance de la rectitude du cavalier et son influence sur le cheval - a mediter

Platinum Stables 05.06.2020

Most horses pass from one human to another - some horsemen and women are patient and forgiving, others are rigorous and demanding, others are cruel, others are ...ignorant. Horses have to learn how to, at the minimum, walk, trot, canter, gallop, go on trails and maybe jump, to be treated by the vet, all with sense and good manners. Talented Thoroughbreds must learn how to win races, and if they can't do that, they must learn how to negotiate courses and jump over strange obstacles without touching them, or do complicated dance like movements or control cattle or accommodate severely handicapped children and adults in therapy work. Many horses learn all of these things in the course of a single lifetime. Besides this, they learn to understand and fit into the successive social systems of other horses they meet along the way. A horse's life is rather like twenty years in foster care, or in and out of prison, while at the same time changing schools over and over and discovering that not only do the other students already have their own social groups, but that what you learned at the old school hasn't much application at the new one. We do not require as much of any other species, including humans. That horses frequently excel, that they exceed the expectations of their owners and trainers in such circumstances, is as much a testament to their intelligence and adaptability as to their relationship skills or their natural generosity or their inborn nature. That they sometimes manifest the same symptoms as abandoned orphans - distress, strange behaviors, anger, fear - is less surprising than that they usually don't. No one expects a child, or even a dog to develop its intellectual capacities living in a box 23 hours a day and then doing controlled exercises the remaining one. Mammal minds develop through social interaction and stimulation. A horse that seems "stupid", "slow", "stubborn", etc. might just have not gotten the chance to learn! Take care of your horses and treasure them. Written by Jane Smiley We are their caretakers...let's do it kindly & with compassion!

When at all possible, blame your saddle for your poor jumping posture--- OK, so I am kidding, right? Well, yes and no. Certainly, in the first photo, on Union, ...when my leg was stable, compared to the swinging leg on Cat, about 30-35 years earlier, I had learned how the physics of jumping worked. But I also had a much better saddle in the more recent photo. A saddle can do a lot either to help you keep your leg under you, or to cause your leg to drift back, based on the structure and balance of the saddle. Just yesterday, when Julia was jumping, and having trouble with her lower leg position, she switched to one of my Stackhouse saddles, and it was like instant miracle cure. Having the right saddle for the job only makes sense, when you think of all the other money that keeping horses costs. And it doesn't mean that you have to spend more for the saddle than for the horse, because cost and a balanced fit may not be tied together. So try lots of different saddles, if you are not comfortable in the one you have, and see if suddenly it feels like that saying about putting on a comfortable pair of old slippers, or old gloves. Or, if money is not a problem, do what the cowboy in the Old Chisholm Trail song did----"On a ten-dollar horse and a forty-dollar saddle, started up the trail, just to punch some cattle---" But it might be a $2,000 OTTB with an $8,000 saddle in 2019, just to keep things in proportion!

Here are two diagrams from Gillian Higgins - The Horse Inside Out book How your Horse Moves demonstrating the positive affects of doing core stability exerci...ses-carrot stretches with your horse . These specific exercises help make the back strong and assist in carrying weight of rider. These muscles include the deep internal muscles of abdomen, pelvic, thoracic sling and back and together with the superficial muscles of the trunk. These muscles are known as the postural ring of engagement. I incorporate these exercises with my services in massage/bodywork and rehab/conditioning/horsemanship . I like the way this man is smack dab in the middle of his horse, so balanced, so soft, just letting the horse crack its back with such total freedom of head and... neck. There is a saying about letting the horse come up to you in a way that closes your various angles, rather than you going down at the horse, and I see this here, as well. I think this rider is named Champ Hough--Someone will know. Anyway, a nice photo to study.

I love this image... It shows just how vulnerable the young horses’ skeleton is. Look how long it takes for the lower jaw & poll to mature.... We put bits in young mouths & in some cases force their bodies into an outline way before their skeletons have matured.

Sharing this from another fellow trainer who posted it earlier. Love this. Appreciate your trainer. We spend way more hours at work than you could eve...n imagine. We are here six if not seven days a week every week. We work holidays. We work weekends. And just because our office is outside and we get to be surrounded by beautiful animals the whole time does not mean we aren’t working. The barn to you is your sanctuary. It’s your escape. It’s your place to vent. Your place to relax. Your place to unwind. That is not what the barn is to us. While we have moments of serenity when everything is quiet, this is still our job. We are still on the clock. We still need to be on our game. Always. Our job is not just riding. We deal with all of you every day. Long before and long after we have come and gone from the barn. During dinners. During drinks with friends. During family time. On days off. We are here for you. We care. We care more than you could ever know. Each and every horse is a part of our soul. We know their mannerisms. We meticulously watch their weight, their movement, monitor what they eat and how much of it, how much they work, whether they are happy doing their job, and how to make them go in a way that pleases you without jeopardizing them. We stay up late with them if they are sick. We write down every time they batted an eyelash wrong. And we remember what they need when. We take pride in them going well for you. We listen to every flaw you find with them, even if it is in fact your flaw, and try to help them do their job better. When you are unhappy with how they go, we take it as a personal failure, and strive to never let it happen again, even if your expectations are unreasonable. We bend over backwards to make your horse perfect, even if what you’re asking for is a horse without spirit, or personality. We stand up for them when we can, trying our best not to make you upset in the process. They are our life’s work, and we know them inside and out. We listen to you. Whether you are rational or not. We remain calm when you bring the stress of your day job to the barn and take it all out on your horse and on us. We pick up the pieces when you’ve been unforgiving with your horse, who was simply surprised by your lack of patience after a long day. We are their rock, their shoulder to cry on, and yours. When we go home, we still reply to your texts and your emails and your calls. We are never off the clock. We take in stride as best we can your rants of frustration when your horse or your riding isn’t exactly where you want it to be exactly when you want it. We take the blame. For you. For your horse. For the rest of your life. For everything. And yet here we are. Still showing up. Still being here for you. For your horse. No matter how you treat us. Regardless of whether you deserve us. We are here. Appreciate your trainer.

Platinum Stables 01.10.2019

Once you have figured out how to create and retain a solid lower leg position, you will find that compared to your former wandering leg, you know, the one that ...seems to run off and do errands while you are up there over the fence, you will feel an enormous sense of security, because, as Mr Morris says, "If you are going to build a jumping rider, build the rider from the bottom up." My lower leg, when I first started jumping, was insecure and tended to go have little chats with my horse's hip bones in the air over the fence, and that feeling of being perched there on my knees made me feel incredibly vulnerable to any stumble or lurch by my horse. The nice thing about curing the wandering lower legs problem, as I think these photos may show, is that once you have trained those little bastards to darn well, "Sit! Stay," they DO stay there through all kinds of situations. So, if you do not like seeing photos of yourself with lower legs that are not securely under you, this IS a fixable situation, if you are willing to address it seriously.

It's getting chilly! Here in Vermont, nighttime temperatures are starting to drop below 40F. If you have a horse with metabolic concerns that is still on past...ure, consider moving him/her to a dry lot. On these cold nights sugar and starch is not used up for growth. However, it is still accumulating during the day, making grass a large holding pot of sugar and starch.

When you pay for a lesson or training, you aren’t buying an hour of my time. You’re paying for thousands of hours of sweat, struggle, success and tears. You’re buying injuries, mistakes, and revelations. You’re buying nights awake thinking about a horse or student I need to help more. You’re buying hours of hauling hay, mucking stalls and grooming, of carefully checking your horse over like It was my own. You’re paying for my further education, because i still take lessons a...s frequently as possible. You’re paying for my care, concern, over dinner conversation, and you inevitably become a central part of my life. You can’t put a price on education, or personal development, or the bliss of finally being with a horse. Thank you for sharing with me, teaching me, and letting me teach you, while I put food on my table and hay in my barn with the most fulfilling job ever.
