The switch from a classic silicon based glass windows occurred in the wave of increased plastics production and decreased cost of raw materials starting in the mid-20th century. These economic advantages, coupled with the mechanical and optic similarities of PMMA with classic glass led to a large quantity of homes utilizing non glass windows. -Why does Acrylic not last as long as a Glass skylight Over time PMMA composed skylights start to loose structural integrate. This is due to a number of factors. One of the most unfortunate disadvantages of PMMA is that it has a coefficient of expansion approximately 11 times larger (PMMA (510)105 K1 ) (Glass (8.5)106 K1 ) this difference in physical properties between silicon glass and PMMA is why cracks start to appear in your Acrylic skylights.
