In Memory of a Shining Star On May 5 we lost a beloved member of our Saint George Academy (SGA) Family, Dr. Zirka Derlycia, who passed away after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Z, as she was affectionately known by her students, was a longtime teacher at SGA her career spanned decades. Throughout her many years of service, she taught high school, as well as grammar school students, in the subjects of English as a Second Language (ESL), Creative Writing and Ukrainian Studies..., and her students thrived under her tutelage. We always knew it was because of Dr. Z’s hard work that our non-Ukrainian students enthusiastically greeted us every morning with Dobryj den! and Pryvit in flawless Ukrainian. Energetic and creative, Dr. Z was always a positive force within our school. She greeted everyone with a smile, and if you were lucky, with a few verses of song. Her energy was boundless and her smile and laughter - contagious. Her students loved her dearly and she cared for each and every one of them, inspiring them to express themselves through poetry, short stories and movie reviews, and motivating them to strive for excellence. She was deeply connected to each of her students on an emotional level, and understood the difficulties that they faced. Dr. Z was also a member of HB Studio, one of the original acting studios in New York City for actors, playwrights and directors. Zirka shared her love of acting with her students. Every year her Creative Writing class would create a Christmas play that was performed before the entire school during the annual school Christmas party. The plays were entertaining and often humorous, and added so much joy to the wonderful Christmas spirit that Dr. Z so cherished. The name Zirka means star in Ukrainian. For those of us who worked with her, Zirka was indeed a shining light. She radiated positive energy and love a love for nature, for holidays, for teaching, for her students, and most of all - for life. You could hear it in her laughter which was like a bubbly melody; you could see it in her bright blue eyes, and you could feel it when you saw her smile light up a room. Zirka’s lasting legacy is one of kindness, dedication and joy a life well lived. She was a devoted teacher, a steadfast colleague and a wonderful friend who touched so many lives and made a difference in this world. We are all better for having known her. Rest in Peace, Zirka. You will be greatly missed but your light will shine on!
