It’s that time of the week again: #musclemonday The Vastus Medialis makes up the inner part of the quadriceps demotic muscles. Often times we hear about Vastus Medialis (VM) or VM Obliquus (VMO) weakness leading to knee pain and port patellar tracking. Think of the outer leg structures (Vastus Lateralus and Ilitibial Band) as being in a constant tug of war with the VM. We always want there to be an even match, but typically the outer structures are stronger or tighter ...and overpower the VM leading to poor mechanics and pain. It is important to recognize this scenario and treat appropriately, not only through strengthening weak areas, but also lengthening tight tissue, correcting muscle firing patterns and training the entire leg and core to work in unison, especially with patients hoping to return to sporting activities involving jumping, cutting and running. #suffolkphysicaltherapy #physicaltherapy #pt #dpt #dptschool #ptschool #dptstudent #fitness #exercise #anatomy #muscle #kneepain #kneepainrelief #health #wellness #suffolk #longisland See more

Here’s a helpful chart to direct the order of how you do your workouts. Never discount the importance of a good warmup. Being properly warmed up is like hitting the starting line going full speed as opposed to having to start from a dead stop. It primes the body for activity. Don’t be afraid to sweat during a warmup! The cooldown is equally important and is a buffer between test and activity. It is best to do static stretching here to minimize negative effects on performance. Do you avoid sleeping on your back due to pain? When you lay flat, it can increase the arch in your low back. This leads to a closing down and compression on the joints producing discomfort. Usually this is due to having tight hip flexor muscles, which pull the spine into a greater arch when lying flat. While stretching the hip flexors will help, try grabbing a couch cushion and propping your legs up on it. This will put your pelvis into a more neutral position and help relax your spine, allowing you to lay more comfortably.
