Langston McKinney became the first African American judge to sit on the City Court bench in #Syracuse in 1986. During his undergraduate studies, McKinney obtained a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Howard University. Changing gears, he went on to graduate from the Syracuse University College of Law with his Juris Doctor degree. He later established the first African American-owned law firm in Syracuse with partners. An advocate for civil rights, much of his legal work related to housing. Fun fact: Named in his honor, Judge Langston C. McKinney Manor located near E. Adams St. remains home to many families.

Walt Dixie welcomed both Mayor Walsh and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to Jubilee Homes of Syracuse, Inc. to advocate for more federal funds to be made available via the next COVID-19 relief package for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). For residents struggling to make ends meet who are also spending more time at home in cold places like #Syracuse due to the pandemic, the need for additional aid has become essential. Senator Gillibrand shared that at least one and five homes in nationwide are behind in their payments for their heating bills. If included in the new package, $10 million will be designated for LIHEAP for low-income households and seniors to supplement the $900 million in emergency LIHEAP funding from the CARES Act.

Van Duyn Elementary - Syracuse students will be extra cozy this winter, thanks to the generosity of school staff, the Syracuse community, and even some stranger...s online. The school hosted a blanket drive this year, seeking 450 blankets, enough to give one to each student in the school. Through two Donors Choose projects, donations from Van Duyn family and friends and others, more than 700 blankets were collected! The school generously decided to gift the extra blankets to students at Oasis Academy, McKinley-Brighton Elementary, Meachem Elementary School and H.W. Smith PreK-8 School. #SCSDGivesThanks to all who helped contribute to this effort! See more

The COVID-19 Emergency Eviction and Foreclosure Prevention Act of 2020 (A.11181) gives New Yorkers the peace of mind that they will not lose their homes during ...the pandemic by temporarily staying evictions and foreclosures until May 1, 2021, and halting all eviction court proceedings. It also protects small landlords by ensuring their properties won’t be foreclosed on. The devastating job and income loss our families have experienced over these past months have made it absolutely critical for us to act immediately. We’re also facing the coldest months of the year and no one should be forced out onto the street because of circumstances outside of their control. This legislation will go a long way in providing tenants some much-needed relief for the time being, but this is by no means a final solution. The Assembly and Senate passed this legislation last night and the Governor signed it into law without delay. This video is from my speech during yesterday's session in Albany: https://nyassembly.gov/mem/Pamela-J-Hunter/video/
