Happy Birthday to Frederic, Lord Leighton, born this day in 1830! A keen proponent of Classicism and a guardian of the academic tradition, Leighton is best known for his works depicting Classical subject matter. Leighton made countless preparatory chalk drawings for his oil paintings, such as this sheet for "The Bacchante" (ca. 1892, private collection).
