Happy Birthday to Frederic, Lord Leighton, born this day in 1830! A keen proponent of Classicism and a guardian of the academic tradition, Leighton is best known for his works depicting Classical subject matter. Leighton made countless preparatory chalk drawings for his oil paintings, such as this sheet for "The Bacchante" (ca. 1892, private collection).

William-Adolphe Bouguereau was born on this day in 1825. One of the most successful history painters of the 19th century, he also painted sentimental figural compositions, which appealed to the European bourgeois buyers and wealthy American collectors. Happy birthday to David Roberts, born this day in 1796! He was one of the first British artists to travel through the Biblical lands of the Middle East, beginning in 1838, and is best known for his series of lithographs derived from those travels, published in his six-volume opus The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Egypt, & Nubia, published by Francis Graham Moon in London in 1842-49. Happy World Animal Day! Among the many animal painters of the 19th century, Rosa Bonheur excelled. She achieved international fame, won the highest awards, and, in 1865 became the first woman to be nominated Knight of the Legion of Honor in France.
