#ECLectureSeries Presents "Uncovering the Tulsa Massacre: Searching for the Lost Victims of an American Tragedy" In 1921 the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma was torn apart in an unprecedented act of racial violence. Following a questionable crime by a young Black man, shots were exchanged by opposing groups then White mobs attacked Black individuals, homes, and businesses, destroying the once prosperous community. Thousands of black citizens were taken into custody by... the National Guard. Despite reports of mass casualties, there were only 39 documented deaths and much of the truth remains buried. On November 9th, join forensic anthropologist Phoebe Stubblefield, an expert on discerning markers of identity and trauma on skeletal remains as well as a relative of a Tulsa Race Massacre survivor, to learn about her work excavating mass graves where hidden victims of the TRM may have been buried. Dr. Stubblefield will appear with historian Scott Ellsworth, who has written extensively about the Tulsa Race Massacre and will explain why the massacre occurred, describe the subsequent coverup, and detail current efforts to determine the facts. Archaeologist John Leader will host this important presentation. This presentation will be streamed live on Monday, November 9 at 7:00 pm EST on explorers.org, our YouTube Channel, and on our Facebook Live! Further details here: bit.ly/38c5QJl

Repost from TEC Fellow, Paul Nicklen Photography: Antarctica Adelie penguins routinely launch themselves five feet or more from the ocean's surface to reach the safety of the sea ice. They are full of attitude, power, and grace, yet of all the antics I've witnessed in Antarctica, no species makes me laugh as openly as they do. I vividly remember the day I was charged by a renegade Adelie after it single-handedly halted a procession of four-foot-tall, one-hundred-pound emperor penguins.
