Bleeding after menopause (postmenopausal bleeding) is not normal. It doesn’t always mean cancer, but it always needs to be evaluated to make sure it is not. Any amount of vaginal bleeding after menopause warrants a call to your obgyn- don’t delay it because there are currently no screening tests for uterine cancer- which thankfully has a high cure rate when caught early!

Happy Sunday! July is Fibroid Awareness Month so let’s take a look at this very common condition! Fibroids are benign (not cancerous) tumors of the uterine muscle. Not all fibroids are created equal; some can cause heavy bleeding, but most are asymptomatic and we find them by accident when looking for something else on a scan. In fact, we often see them during an initial ultrasound to check on baby during pregnancy! We treat them differently depending on where they are, if there are symptoms, and what the woman’s age and fertility desires are. Here is some patient education from ACOG that explains more! https://www.acog.org//gynecologic-problems/uterine-fibroids
