2020, in short, has been a bit of a mess. Every one of us has been impacted by this pandemic, and it has begun to take a toll. We are all weary and wishing for ...change and positivity. Things may seem as though they are never ending, but let’s begin to look towards the light at the end of the tunnel. Let’s begin the New Year with nothing but positivity and hopefulness that this time next year will look much different. Let’s think about what good has come out of this past year and what we choose to carry forward with us. Whether big or small, reflect on the positive highlights from this year and share them in the comments below. For us at Madison County, seeing how well our employees adapted and excelled in a time of crisis has been our ‘something positive’. They are exceptional and we are lucky to have them! We will take the experiences learned from this year and move into 2021 providing services to the best of our ability, which our community depends upon.

Effective Tuesday, December 8, all punch cards will be sold at the Scale House(6641 Buyea Road, Canastota). The Solid Waste Main Office will be CLOSED to the pu...blic due to the rising cases of COVID-19 and limited staff resources. If you need to buy a punch card, residents can still buy them from the Scale House (next driveway over from the main office) or from designated local gas stations and businesses. To see a list of all of our local vendors who sell punch cards, please visit: www.madisoncounty.ny.gov/2468/Punch-Card-Vendors. Please be advised that some local vendors may have reduced hours during this time. If possible, call ahead to the nearest punch card vendor to make sure they are open. Every Monday night there is a free, wholesome meal available for takeout at Friendship Inn of Cazenovia. It is located downstairs at the Cazenovia United Method...ist Church sharing space with Summit Church. If you know someone who needs a meal each week, come pick one up for them. Take one yourself. Give one to the shutin next door. There were only a few who showed up tonight to take advantage of this gift. I know there are hungry people out there. See more

Do you know the best way to help prevent the second shovel? When snow is accumulating and the snow plows are out keeping the roads clear, the best way to prev...ent shoveling the end of your driveway more than once is to make sure that you clear the area to the left of the driveway. That way when the snow plow comes through, the snow on the road has a place to go. See more

We look back on some of the events we were able to hold in 2020, some pre-covid and some socially distanced. It has certainly been a challenging year, but we a...re proud to still be able to give back to this community. Some of the highlights include: Safe Child ID cards, bike helmet fittings, poster contests, classroom demonstrations, drive through Trick-or-Treating, and drive through Shop With a Sheriff. Sheriff Todd Hood and the Madison County Sheriff’s Office look forward to more events in the future, and wish everyone a Safe and Healthy New Year. See more

In honor of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, we will be telling the story of two Madison County Veterans who were there. LaVerne Austin enlisted in the Navy whil...e a senior at Cazenovia Central School on 7 December 1940. He initially was trained Newport, Rhode Island before transferring to San Diego, California and later Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in August of 1941 where he was assigned to the USS Arizona. He achieved the rank of Second Class Seaman. Austin was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Following his death he was posthumously was awarded the Purple Heart and his family received a scroll signed by President Roosevelt honoring his memory. The scroll read: In grateful memory of Laverne Alfred Austin who died in the service of his country at Pearl Harbor. T.H. attached U.S.S. Arizona, 7 December 1941. He stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live, and grow, and increase its blessings. Freedom lives, and through it, he lives-in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men.
