Meet Our Residents! This week, we’re featuring Dr. Kenan Rajjoub - PGY-1: Why did you choose UB's Neurosurgery program? I choose the program for three reasons, 1. This program is very unique in that attendings here welcome questions and will explain it in a way that you not only know the material but that way you can understand it, this allows you to be able to learn how to think. 2. The operative volume here is unparalleled in both surgical volume and complexity. 3.... Attendings here will allow you to do the procedure in its entirety, even if something unexpected happens, providing for a better education overall as you learn how to manage difficult situations Where did you grow up? Williamsport PA Did you always want to be a doctor? Please explain. I always flipped back and forth between business and medicine, it wasn’t until the death of my cousin when we were both 10 that I decided I wanted to do medicine. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Neurosurgeon What's your favorite thing to do in Buffalo (when not working)? Explore the city, it is continuously growing and offers a lot to do in the way of city life as well as nature related activities (i.e. hiking, sports etc) What's been the most challenging part of the UBNS program so far? Many of the attending here are brilliant and run at 150%, 100% of the time, this raises expectations which can be difficult to meet, let alone exceed. It does, however, allow me to continuously push myself which will in turn help my training. What's been the most rewarding part? Seeing the reactions of families after a successful case Describe your fellow residents in three words. Work hard play hard (I know it’s 4 however I think it’s the best way to summarize it)

Meet Our Residents! Next up is Dr. Elizabeth Nyabuto - PGY-1: Why did you choose UB's Neurosurgery program? UBNS has some of the most skilled, knowledgeable, & personable neurosurgeries that I have met. They not only performed with incredible technique, but they also took the time to really teach. There was never a time where I wasn't growing in regards to presentation skill, knowledge base, or communication skills when it comes to talking with families. Secondly, I sa...w my own potential and the heights that I could reach after training in this program. UBNS has a large volume of cases and several different faculties to learn from. This was the most appealing thing to me because I love to observe, and there is so much I can learn from each of the attending and build my own craft. Where did you grow up? I grew up in Arlington, Texas & then relocated to Mansfield, TX for the majority of my teens. Did you always want to be a doctor? Please explain. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a doctor. That might be partially induced from my dad telling me to be a doctor since before I was out of the womb, but also due to my own fascination with human anatomy and the nervous system. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Since I remember, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in Neurosurgery. What's your favorite thing to do in Buffalo (when not working)? Eat. I am a huuugeee foodie and am always down to try new food places. What's been the most challenging part of the UBNS program so far? Adjusting to the hours. This is in part due to the fact that I had completed medical school a few months before graduation and I spent the majority of it getting 12+ hours of sleep. What's been the most rewarding part? The most rewarding part is honestly getting to talk to the families. Sometimes it does take a significant portion of the day to update families and talk through all the plans in hospital for the patients, but the amount of gratitude and relief families express from being updated really makes it all that more rewarding. Describe your fellow residents in three words. Friendly. Funny. Fiery.

Meet Our Residents! We’re excited to launch a new series featuring our UBNS #neurosurgery #residents. We’ve asked them a handful of questions so that our followers can get to know them better. Kicking things off with Dr. Matthew McPheeters PGY-5: Why did you choose UB's Neurosurgery program?... I was drawn to the UB Neurosurgery due to its history as a pioneer in endovascular neurosurgery. However, after interviewing here and seeing the facilities, I was blown away by the breadth of experience available. I also found Buffalo to be a nice town to live in and raise my family. Where did you grow up? I grew up just outside of Minneapolis, in a town called Edina. If you ever watched Mighty Ducks as a child and recall the "cake eater" Adam Banks, yep, that is where I am from. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was little, I wanted to be a firefighter. My favorite movie was 101 Dalmatians, and I was convinced that every firefighter owned a dalmatian, which was enough of a reason for me. What's your favorite thing to do in Buffalo (when not working)? Buffalonians like to think they have some of the best food in the world (spoiler: it is decent, but not as good as they think it is). I prefer slow cooking ribs or brisket on my Big Green Egg while spending time with family and friends. What's been the most challenging part of the UBNS program so far? The most challenging part of being a neurosurgery resident for me are the times when I am with my family, but on call, and have to leave for an acute case, as family time is already limited. However, these acute cases, the left M1 occlusion or acute subdural, are also the most rewarding, because I know that when they go well, my patients will ultimately be given more time with their families. Describe your fellow residents in three words. Intelligent. Eclectic. Compassionate. #neuroresident #residentlife #medicalresident #surgery @Jacobs_Med_UB
