Utica College Performing & Fine Arts 05.07.2021

A few days ago the group Nomadic Voices was able to host a small, informal open mic in Strebel AUD. I managed to catch this clip of a few current members of our student dance club Africa in Motion showing off a little something. I need to say that this moment touched me deeply because there has been SOOOOO little of exactly this all year. I can't wait to see this group fully back in action next semester!

Get in on the fun for our ONE ACT PLAY FESTIVAL next semester! (LOTS of ways to participate!) We are offering THE 441 Directing in the Theatre next semester MF 3:30-4:45 (with some variation due to show/ rehearsal scheduling), and we’ve created a whole adventurous plan surrounding it. The class itself is taught by Dr. Rachel M.E. Wolfe and it promises to be a challenging yet super fun and engaging experience! (If you have a high level of interest but have not completed the... prereq, PLEASE talk to her about it. She is likely to override prereqs if the passion to learn is there.) Instead of the larger-scale mainstage production we usually do as a department, we’ll be producing a smaller-cast/ smaller size department show. Our set and lighting designers will be designing a stock set and stock light plot that will allow for easy adjustments for other shows. Our mainstage will then act as a case study for the Directing class for the first half of the semester, as they learn about all the little steps directors take to get to the end result. THEN they will get to pick one act shows to direct as part of our end of the semester one act festival! Students who audition for and are cast in ANY of these shows, mainstage or one acts will be eligible for Theatre Practicum or Theatre Workshop Credit. Additionally, we’ll be offering a couple of supporting one credit classes that will use the one act festival as experiential learning in conjunction with the class. We are offering a one credit T3 THE 300 Z1- Programming a Light Show for students who would like to learn how to program for the ETC lighting universe. (This is a skill that easily translates to other brands.) Students will be able to download the ETC program we use in our school lightboard for free to their own computers as well as a free program for visualizing lighting, then will be able to practice coding on their own using computers and create a light show for their one act project by the end. We are also offering THE300 C- Introduction to Stage Management. This class is one credit and meets the last third of the semester 7-8:15 TR when it has real class times, but some class sessions will be replaced with supporting rehearsals for the Directing One Act festival and those times will be arranged with specific show teams. Students who have special interest in scenery or costuming also have opportunities to get practicum or workshop credit for designing scenery adaptations for the stock set and/ or designing costumes for specific one acts! Talk to Laura Salvaggio if you are interested. Auditions for all of this will be announced next semester!!!!!
