Recreation Park is a public park in Binghamton, New York. Located in Binghamton's West Side, Recreation Park is bordered by Seminary Avenue on the South, Beethoven Street on the West, Schubert Street on the North, and Laurel Avenue on the East. It was founded by shoe manufacturer George F. Johnson, and is home to one of his six famous carousels. Nathaniel Cole Park is named after a Revolutionary War veteran who settled with his family in 1795 in an area that eventually came to be called Cole's Hill. Together with his son, Nathaniel Cole, Jr., he built a tavern on the corner of what is now Farm-To-Market Road and Watrous Road. The tavern, in operation as early as 1800, became a stopping place for the stage coach en route from Binghamton to Albany. The East Sidney Dam, located in the northeast part of the Town of Sidney, was completed in 1950 to control the floodwaters of Ouleout Creek. It protects communities down stream like Unadilla, Bainbridge, Conklin and Vestal from high flood crests and potential damages associated with flooding.
