To: Mayor Bill DeBlasio August 27, 2020 Subject: The Sad Politics of Covid 19 Am I patient and supportive? Not anymore, I’m angry! Mayor DeBlasio you actually ...said you were reluctant to start indoor dining in NYC because it’s actually for middle and upper income New Yorkers and that clashes with your pledge to transform the Big Apples tale of two cities with progressive policies. So, closing indoor dining really isn’t about controlling the spread of Covid 19, it’s about carrying out your personal legacy. Regardless of that, what an absurd thing to say! Do you really think that people in a lower income bracket don’t eat out from time to time? And after 6 months of pain and suffering from the people that put you in office, don’t you see that your only focus now should be getting people back to work safely, like the 300,000 restaurant workers that earn at or just above minimum wage? Last I checked, they fall into the group that you made a pledge to. With the City’s positive test rate at 1%, and every other county in the state enjoying indoor dining without a spike in Covid cases, this just doesn’t make any logical sense. We were told that indoor dining would resume in July, OK, the numbers weren’t good, then September 3rd, well now the numbers are great and now we’re told perhaps next year when there is a vaccine and that there is no plan at this time to reopen. No one I know can get their head around that statement from the very person who should be leading the way out of this. The only logical explanation is that this is a political play. The key word is play because you are playing with the liveli- hoods of so many people for your own personal benefit. If schools are safe enough for our children to learn in, stores are safe enough to shop at and restaurants around the state are safe enough to dine in and there has been no spike in cases, then why not restaurants in NYC? What is the difference between a 75 seat restaurant at 50% capacity in Albany or Nassau County and one in NYC? Nothing! What sparks a surge in cases is carelessness and as a resident of NYC, I can tell you that people are not careless, they are respecting the recommended guidelines that the authorities have established. On behalf of the 300,000 restaurant workers, the farmers, ranchers, wine makers and suppliers we’re not asking for consideration from you or Governor Cuomo, we demand that you do the job that we elected you to do. One thing is certain, if all the politicians were on unemployment, we’d all be back to work.
