Continuing with our updates on the 2019 IPF Grant, we’d like to congratulate Alice Bailey on being a recipient of this years award. . . . .... . Alice Bailey is an Alaskan artist who uses photography and printmaking to explore modern life in the far north. Her work captures the beauty and complexity of subarctic communities located hundreds of miles from the road system where remoteness and reliance on nature affect the built landscape and create contemporary subsistence culture. Bailey graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2014 with an MFA in Photography, was awarded an Artist Residency at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in 2015, and taught photography at the University of Virginia from 2016-2019. She now resides in Fairbanks, Alaska. The foundation extends its sincere gratitude and thanks to everyone that submitted to this year’s round of the IPF Grant. We received a large number of remarkable entries this year and were impressed with the quality and breadth of work being created in the lens arts. In the coming days we will be highlighting those chosen as recipients for 2019 Siskind Grant. In no particular order, we’d like to start by congratulating Joshua Dudley Greer [@jdudleygreer]. . . . .... . For Siskind art had a purpose. As he once said, "To me, in a deep sense, it’s the purpose of art that a work of art is something that’s composed, it’s orderly, confined, it’s within bounds, you can comprehend it." . . . .... : Puruchuco 33 (1979) . . . . . . . . . . #blackandwhitephotography #abstractexpressionism #abstractphotography #35mm #filmisnotdead #photography #blackwhite #peru #landscape #filmphotography #abstraction #1970s #monochrome #aaronsiskind #aaronsiskindfoundation See more

"The pictures that I can figure out... I lose interest in as pictures. When asked about his work and where he sees it Siskind once said, "I want to bring my pictures to the ideal of music. The business of making a photograph may be said in simple terms to consist of three elements: the objective world (whose permanent condition is change and disorder), the sheet of paper on which the picture will be realized, and the experience that brings them together.
