An articulating crane is a mobile crane in which there is a joint installed between two sections of the boom. This enables it to move in a way similar to a knuckle in a human finger, so it can lift objects with a wide range of motion.

We recommend that you have your crane operators test the controls of any equipment they operate at the start of each shift. If any of the controls are not functioning properly, it is important to repair or adjust them before the crane resumes operations.

Many of the gothic churches constructed during the Middle Ages were built using a tread wheel crane. The crane would be constructed and used on the ground floor, then as the structure grew, it was systematically dismantled and reassembled on the next floor.

In 1589, master builder Domenic Fontana wrote The Movement of the Vatican Obelisk. In it, he documented the construction of the stationery crane and the technologies and methods used to relocate the 344-ton stone tower from the Circus Maximus to St. Peter’s Basilica.

The first cranes weren’t like the large, complicated machines that we use today. The original crane was a simple winch-and-pulley system, followed quickly by compound pulley systems. Even these simple cranes were so effective that the Greeks used them to build temples like the Parthenon.
