Dear Vermont Large Animal Clinic and Adirondack Valley Veterinary Clinic clients, VLAC and AVVS are monitoring the impact of COVID-19 (Coronavirus 2019) in Vermont and New York and would like to take a minute to discuss the measure we are taking as a veterinary clinic to do what we can to prevent infection to clients and employees. With the growing threat of COVID-19, our main priority is the health and safety for our clients and employees while continuing to provide excepti...onal veterinary care to our patients. VLAC and AVVS are well prepared and, at this time, will continue to operate normally for routine and emergency appointments. We will keep you informed of any changes via our websites and Facebook pages. Here are the measures we are taking and what we are asking of our clients to help aid in the prevention of COVID-19, along with general practices that we have implemented as practice standard: If any employee is feeling ill, we have asked that they stay home and quarantine themselves based on the recommendations of their personal Physician. If any client is feeling ill please either, make arrangements to have another person at the appointment or reschedule the appointment. We are implementing the no contact rule. We will not be able to handshake while at appointments to prevent the spread of COVID-19. During appointments, we will be doing our best to keep social distance from clients to prevent the aerosolized transmission of COVID-19. Between each interaction with a client, our employees will use hand sanitizer. At the end of each appointment, we will wash our hands for a minimum of 20 seconds with soap and warm water. We ask that you limit the number of people that will be at each appointment. If you have a multi-horse barn, please designate 1-2 people to represent all clients that will not be at the appointment. With this, we do ask that if you are a client not at the appointment, please be reachable by phone to discuss any findings, concerns or questions that we may have. If you need to pick up medication from our clinic, please CALL AHEAD and we will have the medication ready for you outside of the clinic to keep the traffic coming and going to a minimum. For In-House cases, we will discuss our plan of action at the time of scheduling your appointment. Please, as always, be sure to CALL AHEAD if you are bringing in a patient. Because COVID-19 is a fluid situation, our measures may change frequently. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us and we will do our best to answer them and accommodate to any request! SPRING 2020 WELLNESS REMINDERS As the ground begins to thaw and the snow begins to melt, it’s time to start thinking about our horse’s routine care and annual vaccinations to keep them happy and healthy! As with previous years, when administering 2-3 or more vaccines we recommend splitting the vaccine appointments into 2 visits, approximately 2 weeks apart, to minimize vaccine reactions. We offer many different vaccine combinations, when you call AVVS we can assist in making ...an individualized plan that best suits you and your horse. Our team recommends the following core and risk-based vaccines: Vaccines: Core Vaccines: o Rabies o West Nile o Easters/Western Encephalitis o Tetanus o Potomac Horse Fever We now offer the Core Eq Innovator. A revolutionary vaccine that provides protection against Rabies, West Nile, Eastern/Western Encephalitis and Tetanus all in one! Risk-Based Vaccines: o Influenza (Flu) o Equine Herpes Virus 1 and 4 (Rhinopneumonitis) o Lyme o Leptospirosis o Botulism o Streptococcus equi ssp equi (Strangles) If your horse has not had a particular vaccine before, then they will likely require an initial vaccine with 1-2 boosters to build up adequate immunity. Routine Care: o Coggins o Physical Exams/Insurance Exams (ColiCare, Arenus) o Blood testing - Vitamin E/Selenium - Endocrine Testing (Equine Cushing’s Disease, Equine Metabolic Syndrome) - Lyme Titer o Baseline Blood work - Complete Blood Count/Chemistry panel o Dental float/Oral exam o Fecal Egg Counts We offer a 3% discount on spring services (vaccines, teeth float, sheath cleaning, coggins, fecal) to those who pay at time of service with cash or check As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our office for any questions or to schedule your appointment!

The numbers are in and the Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) has posted their 2019 Disease Report update for the year! The EDCC is a communication syst...em used to alert the equine industry against infectious diseases. They function similarly to the CDC for humans. The EDCC can report disease outbreaks to the public, and only releases information confirmed by a state veterinarian with laboratory diagnostics. Take note that our neighboring states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New York had cases of Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis, West Nile Disease, Equine Herpesvirus- Respiratory and Neurological, Equine Infectious Anemia, Strangles, and Potomac Horse Fever. Even though Vermont does not have any EDCC reported cases of these diseases, we do have groups of mosquitoes that repeatedly test positive for many of them. Vaccines are important and can help prevent your horse from becoming one of these statistics. Therefore, as veterinarians we strongly recommend vaccinating your horse(s) twice a year and testing for EIA via a Coggins at least once a year. Please call our office if your horse(s) are not up to date on their vaccines and a Coggins test. We will be glad to help and answer any questions you may have. http://www.equinediseasecc.org/
