2021 has been happening for 24 days and AFS is finally getting around to the first IG/FB post of the year! 2020 was a year of many things. I would like to thank all the amazing customers who allowed AFS to collaborate on projects during the year. There are wonderful subcontractors and suppliers who I work with that help keep things running. This past fall there were some exciting transitions. The Wood-Mizer LT40 Hydraulic that has been the workhorse of the AFS Sawmill ...Service moved on to a new home and owner. It is located on Martha’s Vineyard working for a boat building and restoration company. In October a new Wood-Mizer LT 70 Super Hydraulic Wide Head came into the business. To say this new sawmill is amazing would be an understatement. It is an amazing opportunity for the future and I am grateful to be able to take this step. In November I had hoped to make this announcement at the end of my week of daily posts...but that got lost in a busy schedule, the holidays and family stuff...What an opportunity to step up and improve in 2021. Over a week ago I challenged myself to post daily on the status of a big surprise. I would not say I scored on top of the grade count, for success on social media, but on the ground and for the work I was doing things went great. Yesterday I spent half the day with the tractor raking and picking rocks. [If anybody wants some rounded rocks let me know!!]. At the end of the day I accepted I will need to purchase a little bit of material to do the fine tuning of a level and... even work space. I present to you the new home base for the Adirondack Forest Service equipment storage and sawmill operation (and future shop and storage buildings). As mentioned we have owned this property for 8 years and my wife has been a good sport about me parking equipment amongst the open areas of the property, by the house. Now it can all be in its own space. The sawmill can be set up here for milling with plenty of space to move around. Log trucks can come and go without turning around or backing in. It is Thanksgiving Week and I want to express my gratitude to all those who have helped me get to this point. Thank you. There are a few other announcements coming but this represents useable space...which has been a quest since first starting the business. Night Ops to finish out the rental time on the machine. A lot of work on the surprise happened this past week. In addition to the surprise I spent a few hours digging up an area for the boys to make some bike jumps yesterday. We will call this roughed in and a great learning opportunity for the boys to finish things out by hand. It is amazing how digging stumps and rocks on cloudy, cold drizzly days doesn’t provide for great photo variety. Topic shift: Tuesdays my wife works a 24 hr shift as a paramedic so the 2 youngest and I do morning routine and picku...p from daycare and dinner together. Day 3 saw working continuing on the surprise but also some work on the Kids Fort. Tucker started this fort several years ago and I occasionally cut something and secure the structure with Timberloks. He and Finley had a Tarp over the ridge pole for about a year. Today he cleaned up a stack of old lumber and was allowed to have it. I was quite proud of how he stuck with the roof board install. We had some rain overnight so perhaps the worksite will be less dusty...based ...on pictures (and rocks) we know it won’t be muddy!! Day 2 phrase of the day COB ROCK CENTRAL! Holy smokes I wish I had a market for rounded rocks from grapefruit size to toasters...I’d be a 1%er in no time!!! Yesterday’s reminder lesson was perspective. When you’re sitting in a tracked machine going over the roadway it feels smoother than your tractor. Going to be some raking in my future. As my day goes along I remind myself this is happening and try to keep that in mind when I am still in step 2 and not on steps 20-...forever.
