Nicole Won Hee Maloof’s video works cover seemingly mundane topics such as bananas and Dunkin Donuts, but soon build towards a wider analysis of the inherent contradictions within American society and culture, touching on race relations, history, and society. Blending her own personal narrative with both geographic and pop culture markers, viewers are led down a path that uncovers little-known histories and facts that challenge dominant narratives surrounding our everyday liv...es. Image: Screenshot of What color is a banana?, 2017 Nicole’s work can be viewed in AHL Foundation’s current online exhibition, We Are Many, through November 15th. You can learn more about her work at tonight’s online Artist Conversation event at 8pm ET/ 5pm PT. WE ARE MANY now live! AHL Foundation is excited to announce the opening of its newest online exhibition, We Are Many, running through November 15th! http://ahlfoundation.org/wearemany Curated by award-winning filmmaker and designer Leah Nichols(@mrawmrawsf), the exhibition showcases the works of three adopted Korean artists: Nicole Won Hee Maloof(@nicolewonhee), Alex Myung(@alexmyung) and Meg O’Shea(@even.little.meg)... This exhibit continues a legacy of adopted Koreans gathering since the 1980s. The intergenerational resistance to infantilization and the tokenizing pressure to serve as educators or ambassadors has paved the way for these three artists to reimagine play and self-expression within ideas of Koreanness. Through a visual language of color, humor, and pop culture symbology, each artist uses adoption as a means, not an end, to assert an evolving, intersectional selfhood. The connections between these artists as well as those that exist between adjacent adopted, fostered, trafficked, and displaced communities, squelch the individualist isolation myth of being ‘the only one’ and evoke, instead, abundance. We Are Many features Nicole Won Hee Maloof, a multidisciplinary artist whose drawings, prints, and videos delve into social relations, zooming in and out from the level of personal intimacy to the larger scale of society; Alex Myung, a queer animation artist whose work explores new intersections between sexuality and his Korean adoptee status; and Meg O’Shea, a comic artist whose autobiographical and non-fiction work as a means of both documenting and processing personal experiences and exploring issues of concern to her. We Are Many can be accessed through the Viewing Room on the AHL Foundation website. An Artist Talk will be held between Curator Leah Nichols and the participating artists on October 19th, 2021 at 8:00 PM ET/ 5:00 PM PT via Zoom. More information on how to register for the Artist Talk will be forthcoming. This exhibition was made possible thanks to support from the Overseas Koreans Foundation. We have several major announcements to make! Located in the vicinity of City College of New York (CCNY) the space will have adequate square footage to host exhibitions, educational programs, and the foundation’s ever-growing Archive of Korean Artists in America (AKAA). This is a challenging endeavor, but ...with the backing of the foundation’s supporters we know that the realization of this project is well within reach. We genuinely hope that you share our vision of showcasing the imagination and artistry of multitudes of Korean contemporary artists active in the United States and welcome your support and input into this project.More information on the new space and how to contribute can be found through the link: https://www.ahlfoundation.org/ahl-space-grand-opening-2022/ See more

"In his installations and videos, Cheon pyo Lee tackles a variety of themes, stylistically marked with absurdity, play, and experimentation. He has a desire to subvert notions of value and authenticity through personal encounters and experiences. Installations such as so much freedom are visually stunning, conceptually provocative, and really fun. In the video Rhinemaiden: A shortness of breath and a taste of ash there are two women repeatedly spitting at each other, but protected with clear plastic masks. It is a simple gesture, at once unsettling and humorous." - Bill Carroll, Director EFA Studio Program Check out Cheon pyo Lee's work in our online exhibition, "C(K)urrent", here: http://www.ahlfoundation.org/ckurrent

"Chang-Jin Lee proposes provocative and bold presentations on topics often too taboo, and too traumatic, to be freely discussed socially and publicly. Her project COMFORT WOMEN WANTED, started in 2013, is an extensive and impressive body of works (so far already exhibited in China, Taiwan, Germany, and throughout the United States). For this project, she has developed various forms of installations and display modes, including a raw presentation in the form of a docu-reality ...video work that involves some of the protagonists sharing songs and hidden memories of their experiences as prisoners during World War II. Also developing on similar themes, are subtle expressive abstract ink and charcoal drawings." - Stephanie Jeanjean, P.h.D. (Adjunct Assistant Professor, The Cooper Union and Sotheby’s Institute of Art) Check out Chang-Jin Lee's work in our online exhibition, "C(K)urrent", here: http://www.ahlfoundation.org/ckurrent/

"In performances, videos and installations A young Yu explores aspects of her Korean heritage, often through elaborate and fantastical settings and with a suggestive narrative that borders on the surreal. These works are ritualistic in nature and have an iconography filled with signs and symbols of loss, decay, regeneration, transformation, transgression, and cultural hybridity. Yu’s aesthetically captivating imagery simultaneously suggests an ancient past and a distant futur...e, existing in an indeterminate temporal space. Ultimately, her works explore ideas of cultural heritage, the transmission and evolution of cultural practices, and how ritual might function when freed from its original context." Marshall Price, P.h.D. - Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University.
