As of right now, NYS is recommending that for those schools which are able to safely re-open in the fall, areas involving voice projection and the removal of a mask, such as singing or playing an instrument, keep a minimum of 12 FEET between individuals. 12 FEET?!?! My gosh!! Safety first, yes, but this mandate could cause the destruction of music programs statewide. Preliminary findings in the US indicate that as long as a the minimum 6 foot distancing is in practice, 12 feet won't necessarily make things safer. The president of NYSSMA has already drafted a letter to our representatives, asking them to reconsider this unnecessary precaution (you can read it on their website).
