Most people think the bees go to sleep for the winter and that's that. The truth is they only go into hibernation or "torpor" (if we use the correct term) when it's very cold out. It's 46 on my porch and I'm feeding them some honey back, there's absolutely nothing else out there for them that's for sure!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Eat lots, bee safe! :)
Great informative video! Not mine.
A lot of people have told me over the years that bees don't reuse wax... First time seeing it being done! She's making candles with those saddle bags :)
Better late than never! Morning Glories finally doing their thing to hide this ugly fence! :)
Here's something you probably don't think about... An evergreen tree producing pollen and attracting pollinators. Some honeybees even collect the sap to make propolis for the hive. I'm counting at least 4 different species on this tree. All the more reason to not spray pesticides everywhere!!
Just as Dandelions are the first major source of nectar for the bees in the Spring, Goldenrod is their last major source to get them through the winter! Please leave some for them! :) Also, Goldenrod honey is very high in sugar! yum!
Some days the bees dine on the flowers, some days the flowers are death traps.... Do you see it?
2 months ago, we tilled a small 50x50' plot in my yard to plant a wildflower garden for the bees. Today is the first day I've noticed there's actually some blooms in there mixed with all the greenery! Very exciting to see finally!! #wnybeekeeper #buffalove #beekeeping #wildflowers #savethepollinators
It's hot out and very dry, so the bees need water just like we do. They use it for cooling down the hive. Don't be alarmed if you see them drinking from your bird fountain or swimming pool, they're just having a sip :)
So apparently the water lettuce in my garden pond is the perfect little private drinking fountain for my bees
Thistle... Prickly, not wanted, weed... This is one of many "weeds" that are allowed to grow on our property. Blue flowers are a favorite of honeybees. Did you know they see the color blue in the ultraviolet range??! So these are like neon signs to them! Milkweed, thistle, Queen Anne's Lace and clover are some of the traditional weeds that people pull from their gardens and yards. We save them for the pollinators!! Consider that before you start yanking plants that don't fit into YOUR plans, bees would love them! :)
The wildflower plot for the bees is coming in nicely! Lots of green already! The girls should love this :)
