Why aren’t I in pain? I am an avid gardener, ice skater, walker and grandmother. Why with each passing day aren’t I becoming more gnarled and bent out of shape? I can affirm that it is the Alexander Technique.... Twenty years ago I was inspired to study AT, mainly because many of the traditional healing modalities were not working for me. At an age when most people think of retiring, I became a certified AT teacher. When I decided to train as a teacher, I thought that even if I never taught, I would age gracefully. And though I didn’t really believe that many of my chronic pains would ease up and almost disappear, because of this work, they have Simply said, I was able to change those habits which gave me pain into habits that strengthened my postural muscles to a point where they support my bone structure and maintain a healthy and upright relationship to gravity. As a voice teacher I know with beautiful singing, the breath creates the sound. So, the integration of my entire body from head to toe, has created easefulness. Whenever I perform any activity, no matter how small or taxing, more of my body is included so that not one part of me is working harder than another. And I am able to maintain balance and support throughout the whole system. I am stronger than I have ever been in my entire life. To be sure, I am tired at the end of a physically active day. But I am not in pain. Claudia Wald

I have recently started ice-skating again. I just love it. There is a certain feeling of freedom as I circle around the ice rink, slowly finding the courage to try crossovers and then the serpentine crossover patterns. In playing around with this, with my Alexander Technique thinking, I have discovered that I can to release my whole shoulder girdle, letting my arms feel like ribbons, as I move along the ice. This release frees the knees to bend more easily, which is essential, and enables my legs to move more freely. Adding these new thoughts to my skating has the effect of instilling more confidence, freedom and fun. Claudia

Recently, I have been thinking a lot about how our negative emotional state can affect our body and how our body can get stuck in that mode. When we feel sad, our body tends to collapse into heaviness, compressing the rib cage and the lungs. Breathing is impaired which affects the entire system continuing the downward pull. Alexander Technique can help you break the cycle by letting your natural reflexes undo the downward pressure and bring lightness to both mind and body. Claudia Wald
