Harlem Renaissance artist Aaron Douglas made "Study for the book 'God's Trombones,' (1926) a year after he moved to Harlem, where James Weldon Johnsona writer, civil rights activist, and author of God’s Trombonesalso lived. In pencil and tempera, Douglas depicts a man surrounded by palms and foliage; the viewer follows his gaze as he looks leftward toward the thick chain encircling his wrist and ankle. By placing the chain in the figure's hands, however, Douglas suggests ...that this protagonist holds his own freedom in his hands. Douglas silhouettes the man in a hopeful beam of light, against a background of varying shades of graya graphic style which he would continue to explore in future works. [Douglas] was probably the visual artist most responsible for defining the style that's come to be associated with the Harlem Renaissance period in modern American art, which was an incredible flowering of creative activity in literature, in poetry, in music, in the visual arts, as well, in the Harlem community of New York in the 1920s.Esther Adler, Associate Curator, MoMA The Museum of Modern Art This past June, MoMA The Museum of Modern Art fulfilled a long-term goal by acquiring this workits first work by Aaron Douglas.

The last of Horace Pippin’s (b. 1888, West Chester, PA; d. 1946, West Chester, PA) seven World War I pictures in private hands, Gas Alarm Outpost, Argonne (ca. 19311937) depicts Black troops on sentry duty behind the front lines. The subject was personal: the artist had volunteered for the 15th Regiment of the New York National Guard, which became the U. S. Army’s 369th Infantry Regimentotherwise known as the Harlem Hellfighters. This Black troop, which was under French c...ommand, was deployed at the front in spring 1918, and awarded a Croix de Guerre for valor. Near the end of his life, Pippin famously asserted that World War I brought out all the art in me. Throughout a productive life in which he created handsome color woodcuts, paintings and drawings that almost always reference people and a romantic world, Walter [Williams] seldom veered away from his single vision focused on bringing beauty to the world even when depicting the harsh realities of everyday life.David C. In his landscapes, Walter Williams used a vibrant color palette and careful layering of woodcuts, collage, and brushwork to draw the viewer into the splendor of an eternal Scandinavian summer’s day. But these perfect worlds are often as much a celebration of the brilliance of nature as they are a reference to the deep suffering and inequity of humanity. Sometimes these references are quite direct, as in the grey/black coloration and unambiguous allegorical imagery of Caged Bird (1966), pictured here. At age 26, artist William H. Johnson (b. 1901, South Carolina) moved to France and lived intermittently in Europe for the next twelve years. While his painting style during this time was largely expressionistic, Johnson pivoted to a unique style referencing his African American ancestry upon his return to the United States in the late '30s. "Children" (1941), which is now in MoMA The Museum of Modern Art's collection, embodies the artist’s deliberately simplified visual vocab...ulary developed during this phase in his career. "Deploying stylized, nonillusionistic techniques, he rendered them not only flat, but also as nearly identical in their frontal stances, outward gazes, and jewel-toned outfits. Despite the ostensible directness of these subjects and their placement in this nondescript space, however, Johnson clearly tackled a political consideration in "Children": the varied skin tones among these three figures remind us of the discriminatory practice, common at the time of this painting’s creation, of determining an individual’s legal (and social) status on the basis of skin pigmentation. In paintings like "Children," Johnsonwho identified as 'both a primitive and a cultured painter'offered a subtle repudiation of accepted standards of race in the United States." "Looking out or looking in, especially from the artist’s solitary point of view, is charged with voyeurism, peeping-Tomism, and Duchampian curiosity: who can forget looking through the hole in the Étant Donnés (194666) and seeing the dismembered nude within?" . Throughout her life, Loren MacIver (19091998) was uncompromisingly dedicated to her own distinctive style of painting, in which she depicted everyday scenes and objects in emotive, ethereal light and color. MacIver's work is on view now at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts as part of "Transcendental Modernism" open through March 14. Today is the last day to see "Tom Uttech: New Paintings." See the virtual exhibition here: https://bit.ly/2KtcUYk . His beloved Migration paintings, examples of which are in major American museums including Crystal Bridges, New Orleans and the Smithsonian, have given way to his most recent motif Reflection paintings. Uttech recently said recalling reflections in still woodland waters: Symmetry is life: it’s reality, and it’s spiritual. That is magic. Painting, hopefully can do that too. . #alexandregallery #artgallery #loisdodd #neilwelliver #johnwalker #stephenwestfall #tomuttech #willbarnet #lorenmaciver #brettbigbee #arthurdove #marsdenhartley #americanart #americanartist #abstractart #abstractartist #modernart #stieglitzgroup @crystalbridgesmuseum @neworleansmuseumofart @smithsonian

We are pleased to participate in the thirteenth edition of the American Art Fair, which opened today and is on view through October 18! Our presentation includes two works by Marsden Hartley: "Fishing Boat #2" (1936) and "Autumn Cascade I" (ca. 1910). Visit us virtually here: https://bit.ly/3lzsu1B . One of the most important American Modernist painters, Hartley is known for his paintings of landscapes, figures, and still lifes that express his own inner emotional life and ra...diate with his reverence for the natural world. Hartley drew inspiration from Cubist painting as well as the writings of Walt Whitman and American transcendentalists Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. These two works epitomize this influence, and also reflect his longtime engagement with the land and culture of his native New England. . #alexandregallery #artgallery #loisdodd #neilwelliver #stephenwestfall #tomuttech #willbarnet #lorenmaciver #arthurdove #marsdenhartley #georgiaokeeffe #americanart #americanartist #abstractart #abstractartist #landscape #americanmodernist #americanartfair #stilllife #waltwhitman #americantranscendentalists #henrydavidthoreau #ralphwaldoemerson #newengland #newenglandartists #painter #maineartists @americanartfair See more

The external world becomes internal in Brett Bigbee's paintings. For almost thirty years, Bigbee has been painting in his signature magical, precisionist, realist style that shares qualities with both European Renaissance masters and American folk art. During isolation for the past seven months, Bigbee has continued to paint more symbolic and metaphoric compositionswhich he began about two years agoexploring personal and intimate portrayals of his own landscape in Maine. "A Desire for Grace," pictured here, is on view at the gallery as part of "Paintings from Isolation" through October 17.
