Finally, someone is daring to question RICE after injury. I agree with this article, based on my experience. I doubt that ice is directly harmful (unless left... on too long), but it probably does slow healing. It is good for the local swelling-induced pain, so then maybe good for the athlete who has to get back out on the court immediately. Rest is ok, but rest with movement is better. Heat is about the same as cold - may reduce local pain, but does little to speed healing. Gentle movement, restrained and mildly loaded stretching of injured tissues, rubbing (especially with trained hands), and elevation? OK, that’ll keep the swelling down too. -- Tom See more
