Friends of Allegany 10.12.2020

The Friends will be holding its last meeting of the year this Sunday Dec 13 at 1pm. We will go live on Facebook for those who wish to view and below is the Google Link for a Google/virtual meeting if you wish to participate. We will also be meeting in person at the Camp Allegany classroom where we will be broadcasting and and hosting a Google Meet session. Covid compliance at the in-person meeting is mandatory as are masks. The meeting will conclude with a vote for the Offic...ers of the Friends. This can be done virtually and privately on a Survey Monkey link we will provide towards the end of the meeting. Positions up for re-election are: Paul Crawford (incumbent President), Mike Weaver (incumbent Vice President) and John Luby (incumbent Secretary) will again run for the same positions. Sandy Boczar (incumbent Treasurer) is stepping down from that position and Carol Jackson will be running in her stead. Sandy will remain in an advisory position as Membership Chairperson. Voting ballots will have a space for write-ins should anyone like to step up for an Officer position. (vote in person or online). Thank you. https://meet.google.com/ayd-yvic-ris See more

Park updates: The construction of the boardwalk by English Creek (ASP Rte 3 by the Quaker General Store) is going well but was hampered by the weather last week. Guard rails will be added to both sides of all of the four new bike path bridges. The last photo shows the near completion of the Ward-to-Deihl footbridge rehab. The abutments and steel i-beams were in good shape but all of the decking and railings were greatly deteriorated. The footbridge over Quaker Run Creek across from Quaker Rental has been completed and is open for business. As usual, a fine job by the Park’s Regional Carpentry’s crew!

Here’s a great old photo of a Park Ranger in the early 1960’s. Thank you Michele Thomas for this cool share!

Great news-the wood for the boardwalk by English Creek has arrived; they are installing it as I type. With the walkway completed (probably by next weekend) the bridge inspector can come in & hopefully approve all 4 bridges so the bike path will be completed for Halloween weekend. This is an educated guess on my part; not an official announcement.

Two old postcards from the mid 40’s showing stairs & railings at Thunder Rocks. Note the tree growth at the time.
