If you live, work, or (used to) vacation anywhere near lakes, you are probably familiar with two species of spiders: 1) The Dock Spider: who floats on the water and eats minnows... 2) The Long-legged Sac Spider ...who creates very sticky webs under house eaves, and especially in boathouses. So how do you repel spiders? A better question is- should you? The first questions is easy- you repel spiders by increasing your bird population, or build Bats nests. Some people think trading Bats for Spiders is oxy-moronic. And bird poop is equally messy on boats. We developed a spider repellent years ago- but never released it for sale. Instead, anyone who has asked how can I keep spiders away from the eaves of my house? I have shared the solution with themand I share it with you now: 1) Get a quart sized spray bottle with an adjustable nozzle (able to squirt both streams, and sprays). 2) 1/3 water, 1/3 orange dish soap, 1/3 orange oil (from most health food stores) DIRECTIONS: Spray the webs, the eaves, corners, etc.anywhere you see spiders. You may have to re-apply 3 days in a row, and then every 3rd day or so... to keep them away. The Orange oil will not hurt the wood- in fact- orange oil is used in some wood polish formulations to enrich the wood fibers. Also- the soap will just hose off. The second question: should you repel spiders? Only if you have a crippling fear of spiders, or if you can’t enjoy the boat by sitting in spider poop, or if you think mosquitos, black-flies, hornets and wasps are all a fair trade for no spiders. Otherwise, leave them alone. They won’t hurt you, and they do keep insect populations down.

A grasshopper’s jump is so far, it would be the equivalent to trying to jump the length of a basketball court.
